How religious is Boston College?

I’m going to be a senior this coming fall, and I am seriously considering Boston College (b/c of its affiliation and pre-med program). Does anyone know how “secular” it is? The less secular, the better, thanks!

As far as being a truly Catholic College, I have not heard too many good things about Boston College.

I believe Peter Kreeft, who is a professor there, said that they call it “BC” because it is “barely Catholic.” 😦

I have heard it is a Call to Action Chapter with a football team  :whacky: … Although I have no first hand knowledge.

I do not know if this is true or not, but I have heard that the Chairperson of the theology board is a unitarian priestess, if that gives an indication to you.

If it’s any indication, until I read this post, I had no idea that Boston College was a Catholic school. And I have friends who study there!

I think everyone was right in saying that it is not religious, from all that I have read. From my husband’s experience at a Catholic sister school to BC, there were some distinctly catholic activities but much drinking, cohabitation, and other vices. BC is more than likely very similar. Keep in mind that this was 14 yrs ago and things have only gotten worse. If you are looking for a truly Catholic college, look at Ave Maria University, Naples,FL . naples.avemaria.edu/ or Ave Maria College, Ypsilanti Michigan. Both are about as Catholic as you can get, and in my oppinion, Naples Florida is about as beautiful as you can get. 🙂 Good luck and God bless. Take care and study hard. 🙂

You might want to look into Christendom College in Virginia, or find a secular university with a good, faithful Newman Club.

Look into the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. I seem to remember that their graduates had a high acceptance rate into medical school and it is Catholic school. I believe one of George Weigel’s children graduated from there this year and Rick Santorum was the guest speaker at graduation.

Well, I am not here to try to make the case that BC is very Catholic, but this one is a little over the top. Just to clear up any false rumours, the Chairman of the Theology Department is Kenneth Himes, O.F.M..

Of course, I am assuming the O.F.M. means he is a priest, yet he never identifies himself as one. His bio says:
A member of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) he has held a number of leadership positions within his religious community.
Maybe he is a Brother, I don’t know. But if he is a priest, his neglecting to identify himself as Father would be indicative. After all, BC is in one of the hot spots of American liberalism, and it rubs off on the school.

BC is about as Catholic as John Kerry is if that answers your question

Look into Franciscan University of Steubenville

Peter Kreeft joked at a conference there that his BC students used to ask him what the difference between Franciscan U and BC is. He would respond, “First of all, BC is a Jesuit college and Franciscan is a Catholic college.”

I attended a sister school of BC [Holy Cross in Worcester]. I believe that BC, [like Holy Cross, Georgetown and other “once-catholic” schools] has catered to modernism. Peter Kreeft teaches there and if you do attend, take every course of his!!!

Contact the cardinalnewmansociety.org , this organization keeps track of which schools are actually catholic in practice.

I’d suggest you consider looking at Campion College in San Francisco, St Thomas Aquinas in California, Franciscan U in Steubenville Ohio, Ave Maria in Michigan and the branch in Naples Florida. There are other good schools besides these.

We’ll keep you in our prayers.

I’m a gradute from Gonzaga University in Spokane WA. I don’t know what it’s pre-med program is like, but I found it to be a fine Catholic university. 🙂

I don’t have any knowledge about their pre-med program but University of Stubenville in Ohio is the most Catholic college I’ve heard of.

Also, if you want a biased point of view, I went to Grove City College which is a very strong Christian school, has a great pre-med program from what I hear, and an awesome Newman Club. http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon7.gif

That’s a cute quote from Kreeft. It could apply to Holy Cross too!

Thanks for all the replies 🙂

Right now I’m leaning towards BC because of its joint-med program with Tufts, its distance (I’m 40 min. away), and its educational level.
I wish there was a top school that had was as religious as Grove City. I guess you can’t have it all
