What is your goal? What are you striving for? Being indignant and offended will not draw your husband to God. (Put holy water on the statue if it frightens you.) Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you.
Being lax and letting him bring idols into the house won’t draw him to God either, instead, it will invite satan right on in. I’m sorry, but being politically correct and not being offended for fear of offending someone has not made this world a better place. Look at the US… we allow abortion, drugs, murder, homosexuality and these things are commonplace, and pretty much accepted as the norm these days… why, because “we didn’t want to offend anyone”
Guess what, it’s the Holy Spirit that will draw him to God… and the Holy Spirit is WAYYYYYYYY more powerful than me, I’m not too worried about offending him at this point. As a matter of fact, when the Holy Spirit does draw him to God, he needs to know by my actions what is and is not acceptable to God.
You asked how to handle this? You wanted “throw it out”, “demand your husband stop this” or even worse “leave him” and then when you don’t get what you think the responses should be you think we are misunderstanding you.
Your husband brought a statue of a mythical god into your house and burned incense. The problem isn’t the statue - its why your husband has suddenly turned back to practices he gave up? You are in a sacramental marriage. Leaving your husband when he truly needs you more than ever is what is far more offensive to God than some statue.
Now you’re putting words into my mouth.
Do I want to throw it out… yes, as a matter of fact, last night I put it out on the front porch. I don’t remember saying that though.
I also don’t remember saying “demand my husband stop this” although, yes, I won’t be a party to this behavior.
and “leave him”?? What I said was “I’m seriously ready to leave.” Does that somehow translate to you that I want to divorce him or something. leave means leave. It doesn’t mean divorce or even separate. What I meant was to to someone’s house for the night so I don’t have to be around that thing.
So yea, I think you misunderstood me.
I guess what I expected from Catholics is that they follow what the Church teaches regarding these things, not some sugar coated, ‘non offensive’ kumbaya song and dance.
This is the St. Michael prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
I know the St Michael Prayer… this is what I was talking about… again, misunderstood:
don’t pray prayers of deliverance unless your director gives you permission.

Leave him, for his sake. To put the shoe on the other foot, how would you like it if you were married to a Muslim who relentlessly pressured you to convert and put you in a position of having to sneak around your own home to stay true to your beliefs?

Ken,
He had every opportunity before Convalidating our married in the Church to tuck tail and run if he chose to. He went into this with his eyes wide open, and knew exactly what I believed.
Now, on the other hand, I don’t “relentlessly pressure him to convert and put him in a position of having to sneak around the house to stay true to his beliefs”. As a matter of fact, before we Convalidated the marriage we discussed this and what his beliefs were ect. He had started to pray, he was out of paganism at that point. Also, on Sundays I ask him if he wants to go to Mass with me, he says “no” and I drop it… does that sound like I’m “relentlessly pressuring him”. Get real.
And for those who wanted me to sing kumbaya to my husband… I actually just came back to this thread to inform you he’s decided to return the idol.
For those who prayed- THANK YOU.

how unusual that you would read my suggestions about how to engage in this spirtual warfare (noncombatant eucharist, spiritual direction, prayer, prayers of protection) as a kunmbaya song and dance.

your assumption that some of us are ignorant about unholy practices is miscalculated. rachel, you shoulda seen my house 25 years ago before the BIG conversion. and you shoulda seen the very tangible campaign the devil made for my soul as i edged toward conversion.

but if we’re all a buncha we-don’t-get-it know-nothings, how about take my one useful piece of adivice: talk to a good priest. one who knolws the devil is real. follow his instructions precisely-- to the last iota.

Rachel,
I’m happy to hear he took back the statue. I was going to suggest that you consider what I did when my husband brought a gun home. It’s a little different but not totally – i’m utterly opposed to guns especially with teenagers in the house, knowing the increased risk of suicide.
I said that I would not live in the same house with a gun. I meant it. The gun is gone and I am still here.
Having your house blessed is also a good idea. When we had it done it was very powerful.
God bless.

NO, you misunderstood, that wasn’t directed totally at you. It was directed to those who think I should have just left that thing in my house, loved my husband without ruffling feathers, and let him do whatever he wanted regardless of the sin involved.
The devil is real, and that thing was a major open door.

Thanks Viki,
I don’t think I would have left him (except maybe for a few days to let him know I was serious about that thing being in the house). But yea. I actually do have a gun here (a couple actually), but no teens in the house, and my guns are for protection. It’s a long story, but I have a very mad mafia hitman that I helped put in jail mad at me (and free now). While normally I wouldn’t have a gun at all, I was told by the police to keep them for my safety. I agree with you though Viki, guns normally = bad news.

Rachel,

I think what I’m the most glad about is that you are aware of the very VERY real dangers that these actions your husband is doing have on everyone and the spiritual warfare involved. Your house is a battle ground, and you are quite correct in being concerned about him bringing those things (statues and the like).

A lot of people these days discount spiritual battles, yet I have met several people who were possibly under the influence of demons. Not processed, but definitely influenced. With your background you know this, and you know what to watch out for.

He needs to stop this. You NEED him to stop this. Your home is no longer a haven or safe place. The fact he has done these rituals within your home now means your home is a battle ground with spirits present. Saint Michael is your friend, and should be one of your chief allies in this. Ask the Prince of Heavenly Hosts for his assistance. In Scripture there are no less than three times he is mentioned, and Revelation specifically has him assigned as the Commander of God’s forces.

Speaking of your home, get your house blessed by your diocesan Exorcist (every diocese should have one). Any Priest can do a blessing, but this calls for special circumstances. In fact, contact your diocese and request an appointment to speak with him. God willing of all people he can provide some great guidance in this matter.

Also, if you’ve had relations with him there’s a danger that in becoming one person, what affects him will affect you. Please PLEASE be careful. Confess frequently, go to Mass as often as you can. Ask our Mother for help, and ask God’s Commander for all the help he can give you.

God bless, and keep your head up.

Rachel, you’ve made an awful lot of assumptions about me, my life experiences and my point of view that are grossly incorrect. Its seems you already have an idea on how you want to handle this so there is no need for outside (name removed by moderator)ut. Your marriage has my prayers. God Bless.
