How should we spiritually treat our material whims?

Hi:

I have a little doubt: I have a little material whim. I’ve had it for a few months, although the fact that it isn’t strictly necessary has detracted me from buying it. It is not very expensive (around $100-$130, depending on the offer). It’s something related to a healthy hobby. But at this point it is absolutely unnecessary. It would be nice to have, but I don’t need it.

If I get it, I’m not sinning by any means and I will definitely use it and enjoy it. If I don’t buy it, I would be increasing my virtues and my detachment from material things. Also, I don’t really have any guarantee that I will not be having a new whim in a few months. Could these kind of material wants be putting me far from God? Am I loving God with all my heart if I’m thinking on that?

Now, my doubt is not exactly if I should or shouldn’t get this object, but if there is some sort of statement by the Church or the saints regarding whims of this kind, or some “material whim theology” regarding these kind of things that are not necessary, nor expensive, but nice to have.

Thank you!

Our expression of charity increases our merit, and then the Beatific Vision in heaven is greater due to that merit. Also doing more penance removes temporal punishments.

Council of Florence
And that the souls of those, who after the reception of baptism have incurred no stain of sin at all, and also those, who after the contraction of the stain of sin whether in their bodies, or when released from the same bodies, as we have said before, are purged, are immediately received into heaven, and see clearly the one and triune God Himself just as He is, yet according to the diversity of merits, one more perfectly than another.
