Hello! I was hoping that some of you wonderful people might be able to offer some advice regarding a situation I currently face!

I’ve always found it very important to date a Catholic man (especially a devout one!), but because my parish is a bit on the older side, I have never found anyone that has really interested me, so to speak. But a few weeks ago, I saw a man at church that really caught my eye! I felt somewhat guilty for feeling attracted to someone during the Mass, but tried my darnedest to focus on the celebration at hand. But lately, I cannot stop thinking about him. He is both physically attractive and seems very pious at Mass. I would like to get to know him better, but I am concerned about using church as a flirting arena. Is there any way I can approach him without being irreverent?

Many thanks!

Nothing wrong with meeting someone at church! Pay attention during Mass. Following Mass see if you could talk to this gentleman on the way out or in the parking lot.

I commend your perseverance; finding women that pursue men (when typically it’s the other way around) seems to be somewhat of a rarity in this contemporary dating culture. With that said, I’d go for a humorously direct approach. Walk up to him confidently, tap him on the shoulder, and say something like, “Hey, I lost my Rosary. Can I use your fingers?” or “You have beautiful (Insert Color Here) eyes - Is your scapular that color as well?”

This will really cause him to think, respond, and hopefully laugh. After you break the ice, it’s all smooth talking from there. He’ll find your humor odd, yet compelling, and you two will exchange numbers, go on a date, get engaged, and the rest is Sacramental. Easy as that.

[/Sarcasm]

In all reality, I’d agree with the aforementioned. Smile at the guy, pray for him, and let God do the matchmaking. Best of luck! God Bless.

I second this. My parents met at church, and my mom asked my dad to her prom (and the rest is history, as they say!).

As a young man myself, Ive never been approached in church or church group by a lady. Maybe women don’t like me, maybe Im not attractive, or maybe women just don’t approach men very much. But what I do know is if you like a guy and he isn’t showing you any interest, I would at least try to approach him at mass and show interest. It isn’t going to help you if you try to just run into him at church function he may or may not attend and just hope he will be attracted to you.

For many people, there may not be an initial attraction but once they get to know you that might start to develop. In any case, I think in this day and age old notions of women being docile and waiting for men to just randomly show up and ask them out need to be put aside and women need to understand that dating is very competitive. There is a surplus of women available versus men available. Men can more easily play the field and pick and choose. Men don’t have a biological clock that is as time critical as a lady has. So if a woman doesn’t like being single, she really needs to be proactive and set herself apart from the many female fish in the sea, so to say.

Why not just approach him and say, Hi I’m . I haven’t seen you here before. Are you new to the area? … or welcome to____. You could invite him out for coffee, or breakfast.

I think there is nothing wrong with meeting someone at church.

However. You can’t stop thinking about him and you don’t know anything about him except that he is good-looking and participates during mass.

You also don’t know if he is married, engaged or already in a relationship. Please don’t approach him and ask him out for even a coffee. See if he is at any other church functions and say hello if it happens you are near to him. He will either want to talk to you and continue speaking to you, or he won’t. Just like anywhere else in life.

Drop your hankerchief. 😉 let him catch you ‘sneaking’ a look at him. Repeatedly.

Walk up to him and wave your hand at him in a semi circular motion and say “Yes, I am the droid you are looking for”- then nonchalantly let him see your Light Saber dangling from your cloak.

Guys are very easy people. It’s too easy to approach a guy. Just approach him and say anything. He will understand.

Actually the problem is the other way round. How do you approach a girl at Church (who is always with her mother)? :hmmm:

I don’t see how/when you could approach anyone at church. I don’t see anything wrong with it, just logistical problems. Maybe it’s just the churches I go to but unless you want to talk to them during the actual Mass, you really wouldn’t have a shot.

Bingo. We’re not difficult. If a young woman comes up to me anywhere and strikes up a conversation, I’ll assume she’s either attracted to me or else just an extremely nice person. In either event I’d be interested in getting to know her better, especially if she’s at least minimally attractive and not completely insufferable to talk to (so, 99.9% of women).
