What I do when I catch myself looking at an attractive woman is to remind myself she is a child of God. Also, I remind myself she is my sister since I am also a child of God. I have actual sisters, so I try to look at women as I do my sisters.

Also, of course, confession when needed.

Thank you my friend. I will do the same. Please the word about this topic. I want as many answers as possible.

Go to mass. Confess. I got literally delivered from a particular aspect of sin within six months of joining the church. Thanks be to God .

When I battled depression I learned a technique to control my anger that was effective for me. I simply have modified it to help when my mind needs some correction. (START) Stop, Think, Assess, Reassess, Talk is used for anger control. I modified it to (STARR) Stop, Think, Assess, Reassess, Refocus.
I’be trained myself to tell myself to stop when impure thoughts enter my mind. I think about what I should be doing. I assess the situation. I reassess to reassure myself what I need to do, then I refocus on what my mind should be thinking about.
It may seem silly to some, but it works for me.

Thanks guys. I try to force impure thoughts out of my head. And I try to control where my eyes look. I think the busy thing works because just today I was at the grocery and an import thought came into my head. I tried to force it out but once I had to run and get stuff for my mom is went away. Keep posting guess this is great stuff. Thanks a lot already.

Believe me, every time something impure is about to come into my head, I say a little prayer and most of the time it goes away. But those other times I just don’t know what to do ya know.

Ok ok so you said to stay busy I want to pray but I usually do that in silence and all the temptations bubble up. How would you feel with this? I want peaceful prayer again.

In his book Thinking Like Jesus psychologist Dr Ray Guarendi covers this in the firdst chapter of the small book. Such attractions to sin are a challenge to the control of the will. There are no tricks to avoid those temptations.

I think we have to treat temptations as just what they are. How long does it take to distance ourself from ANY temptation? It’s not instantaneous so we should not expect it to go away magically. Perhaps we need to focus very deliberately on reminding ourselves of the damage from sin, the damage to our relationship to God, and push the temptation away as the temptation that it is.

We have to avoid the steep slippery slope into the sin itself, whatever the sin is. Sin is idolatry which turns us away from God. We need to refocus ourselves on seeking Jesus and following him.

We need to control our will. We seldom lose all control of our will, Guarendi says. So, we need to use that will to align ourselves with God’s will. Our flesh is attached and directed towards sin, but we must use our will and conscience to turn away from sin. You have a lot of control to avoid a lot of sins, and we all need to extend this to all of our sins.

consider psalm 16 :7-8

I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me’
with him at my right hand
I shall not be disturbed. NAB
