How to be a good godmother

My husband and I were asked to be the godparents of a friend’s kids, ages 4, 5, and 6. I know we should pray for them, and whenever we can, help their mother (their father is not yet Catholic, though we are working on him) teach them about the teachings of the Church. However, we do not live near them and cannot be physically present often.

What are the requirements for godparents and what can we do to be the best godparents possible?

The godparents are expected to help the parents raise the children in the faith.

I am a godmother to a niece and nephew who live in New Zealand (we are in Canada). I help support their parents by praying for the kids and sending them fun things to enrich their faith. (For example, I have sent Catholic picture books and have made some Nativity finger puppets to send this year.)

Yes to the previous post. We pray for our godchild and his parents every day. He’s not yet 2, so no deep conversations yet, but prayer works wonders, and we send him small gifts on Christmas and his birthday. For his baptism we have him a really nice Catholic Children’s Bible.

But beyond the gifts, I really think prayer is the best thing, even if you can’t be there often physically. When you can, show your godchildren how you live the faith in your everyday words and actions.
