How to be an active K of C, when you have a busy schedule?

I’m hoping to hear from some men on here, who are part of the Knights of Columbus, and have busy schedules. My husband was very active back in PA, and joined the chapter here in Tampa last year. He is so busy with work hours, how can he show that he wants to take his role within the group seriously, without shirking other responsibilities? 😦

Look forward to any advice you might have for me to give him. He thanks you, too!

Half the Knights here are working men. They do what they can around their schedules.

Meetings are once each month on Thursday nights, those who can attend, do. Men volunteer to help with the events that work for them, some may only be able to do one event each year. Some can assist in prep (mailing things out, sorting and pricing for the big furniture sale, getting food for various things, counting money after, etc.) at odd times.

He will never know what opportunities are available unless he goes calls up and asks!

*kage–the problem is he works a lot of unexpected hours…so when he commits to something with the K of C…his schedule changes, and he has to forfeit heading over to help out within the group. That’s his personal challenge, but I am going to see about things he could help with from home, on a day off here and there. He misses the meetings, he loves to go, and says that they were always uplifting to be around likeminded Catholic men. No, I know that most of the men within the group work…at least that has been our experience, but he works a lot of last minute overtime. I am hoping things get a little more stable over the summer, the K of C do a lot of neat things here during the out of school months. *

I think one of the best things we ever got from the Knights was a piece of marketing that showed what they due with the dues money. It is amazing how many wonderful acts of charity are done JUST through the dues collected. My DH is in a similar boat of having no time and feels good just knowing that he can help out in that way.

I’ve submitted the application to join the KofC but have not had time to go to the first meeting where they have the ceremony for the First Degree. I am reluctant because I do not have enough time and I may be accepted to enter seminary this August. I like to do volunteer work but not sure if if it is the right time to join KofC. Another reason, some guys suggested me to join so that I may have sponsorship if I enter seminary; however, this is not my intention to join and I am worried that some might think wrong about my intention. I am praying that I should not judge how others think of me joining the KofC - I am struggling about this thought.

WE have the same problem since DH works nights and most meetings are then so he misses them.
However he gets all the KofC info via email and gets called for things during the day, not always possible as that is when he sleeps.
He does help out whenever he can and especially on weekends…

I agree, I was impressed too!!

*Maybe you should discuss with a priest? It doesn’t seem that would be your only intention is to receive sponsorship…but that could be a nice plus. I think you should join, it’s an awesome group, of sacrificing men. Just my thoughts – will keep you in my prayers for discerning this. *

Thanks for your suggestion. I have not talked with my spiritual director, who is a priest, yet. I will bring this up at our next meeting.

I joined the KoC in April this year and i already missed the May meeting. however I am in constatn contact with them. Any time i feel i have some free time I let them know and they always have something for me to do.

I think when your husband finds some spare time, he might want to contact them and see if they have something for him for that day.

I hope that helps

God Bless

I’m sure other Knights will offer more concrete suggestions, but I’d like to say that having just become a Knight yesterday, as part of my application and initiation process I was repeatedly told that all the Council wants from me is what I can do without in any way straining my family relationships.

Perhaps your husband could talk to his Council leadership and ask them for their (name removed by moderator)ut–maybe they have some tasks that could be performed on an as-available basis (sorting through old paperwork, maintenance on some equipment, whatever) that your husband could do as his time permits. Or maybe he could contribute by encouraging his friends to become Knights; I’m sure that would be appreciated.

I’ll bet they’ll have some good ideas for him.

*That’s a very good idea. I also think that there are probably activities on his off days, but then when will he see me and the kids? 😃 Once his overtime subsides, I think it will be much easier for him for participate…he really misses his chapter back in PA. 😦 *
