So I am new to Catholicism and I have noticed that you all tend to go all out on Christian holidays. I love that! As a Protestant, I would normally just go to church and possibly attend a cookout. This year I want to actually celebrate it because I understand the meaning of Holy Week so much differently now. What can I do? What scriptures should I meditate on? What are some good traditions to start doing to celebrate Easter Day?

In our family, we attend the Easter Vigil then have a late supper after, pizza place or a late night breakfast. Sunday morning we sleep in, get up and have a special lunch together.

If you haven’t been to an Easter Vigil Mass, those are pretty amazing, especially at big cathedrals in major cities.

Thanks, Lily,

Also, the USCCB will email the daily readings to anyone interested, and the readings (from the NAB) can be looked up, here:

I’m not sure if the RSVCE is available online, but I think a lot of people prefer that version/translation over the NAB.

What are some good traditions to start doing to celebrate Easter Day?
What we do is celebrate our culture, our heritage with recipes and traditions related to them. It can be very interesting esp if you’ve traced your ancestry or done one of those DNA kit tests and find your gene pool is more interesting than you thought.😀

So while you want to keep the day holy, why not try something like that? Like if your heritage is English, Irish, Welsh or something else, try celebrating Easter the way your ancestors did. Learn the culture and traditions and then have fun with it. You get to celebrate Jesus’ glorious Resurrection as well as your ancestry.

There are all kinds of ways to celebrate the Liturgical Year, including Easter. Each culture has it’s own traditions. Here’s a link to the Catholic Culture website. At the top bar you can click on the Liturgical Year and it will tell you all about what feast, solemnity etc is being celebrated on this day and the readings, prayers, recipes, activities etc that you can choose from to help you start your own traditions. Don’t get overwhelmed. Just pick what might appeal to you personally or would have some personal meaning for you.

Also, a wonderful book I can recommend that was written by two converts who were overwhelmed by all the devotions and ways of celebrating in Catholicism, is called The Little Oratory: The Beginner’s Guide to Praying in the Home. It covers the liturgical year and everything you would need to know to start traditions of your own. The author’s said it was the book they wished they had when they first converted.

That’s funny, Faith. When I got to BibleGateway.com, I was immediately taken to the Verse of the Day from the RSVCE. I clicked the “RSVCE” and was taken to a page where I could type in the book of Scripture I wanted to read.

I just noticed there’s a gray1 after my link. If that gives you a problem, just highlight the link that’s in blue. I don’t know why that number showed up.

I am an RCIA catechist in our small rural parish. We didn’t have any catechumens or candidates this year, so we traveled to the city for Easter Vigil at the Cathedral in a few hours.

I think it’s a counter so you know how many views it got.
I never thought of that, EricF. Could be since I didn’t see it when I originally posted the link.

Thank you so much.😀
