How to Choose a Saint

So I am in RCIA and the leader mentioned I should starting reading about and praying as to which saint I would like to be my Patron Saint.

I borrowed a childrens book from the library and looked through it and I am very intrigued by St. Robert Bellarmine.

Anyhow, can anyone recommend any resources to read about and get help in picking?

I highly recommend a book called, “The Essential Wisdom of the Saints.” It is full of quotes from saints all over the world. There are plenty of websites that have a bunch of saints you could read about.

I’m so glad you’re coming home to the Church!

Step 1: I really agree about The Essential Wisdom of the Saints. My mom found a copy at Barnes and Noble, and gave it to all our relatives for Christmas (Some of them are Catholic in name only, too ) 😛

Step 2: Find a Catholic bookstore in your area and see if they have info about saints who sparked your interest from the quotes. Also check www.catholic.org. They have a whole search engine for saints and angels (by name, gender, patronage…). If there’s a good Catholic college in your area, try checking their library but be careful–there’s sometimes sketchy stuff in college libraries. (I’d recommend a public library, but they’re even sketchier sometimes. However, if you’ve seen the title in a reputable Catholic bookstore and also in the library, save money and check it out, and then buy it if you like it.)

Step 3: Pray. Talk to the saint, ask for their intercession in your life. Talk to God about them, too.

One of my favorite parts of the Catholic Church is the Communion of Saints. It’s like having a gazillion really awesome older brothers and sisters that are pullin’ for you when things are good and when things are bad 👍

There’s so much going during those heady days of RCIA and time can get so hurried up. Just focus on Lent and your journey towards the Lord. Don’t sweat this. It will come to you on its own terms. It really will. And you will know when it happens. (Of course, continue to read about and research the saints by all means. But savor it. You’re making a new friend with each and every saint you read about and “meet”!)

Read about the lives of saints, and pick the one you feel to be the most touching.

St. Paul the Apostle is my patron saint, because I persecuted Christians before I became Catholic. I feel a strong attachment to him because of it.

That is awesome! I love hearing that there are stories such as your own. Not because of you persecuting the Church, but because of your conversion. Thank God for people like you!
