How to Comfort Friend With Long Term Suffering?

I have a friend that has been battling a disease that almost cripples her. She is a Mennonite and usually has a very good attitude. The last time I talked with her she seemed to be losing hope. Is there a particular bible passage I can direct her to? Or some reading?
