So as an adult I have seen many other Catholics connect to the parish priest on a personal level. I would like to do that but don’t seem able. Advise?

We have, it is not that the priests are not nice, but they keep a professional distance. You know when you like someone and you just feel comfortable around them. This is what I would like with my priests. Many priests have come and gone. I can’t seem to get there.

Help him with something he needs help with. That’s the best way.

Or, if he leads trips anywhere, go on the trip as part of his group.

There are a lot of reasons why some priests might do this.
Some priests aren’t “people persons” and don’t respond all that well to friendly invitations and overtures.

Some are so worn out from the demands of ministering to people in need and running the business of the parish that they don’t have much energy left over to be social with their parishioners.

Some simply don’t have enough time, so they just concentrate on the persons most in need of spiritual help (such as persons who are dying or having some crisis of faith) and try to keep some of their personal time for themselves to spend in the way they choose, which likely means declining some invitations.

Some are wary of being seen as too friendly with any particular parishioner, which could cause gossip or jealousy. Or perhaps they know that accepting an invitation from X would mean that Y and Z would also send invitations and the priest worries about being able to meet everyone’s demands.

Maybe you really don’t have anything in common with these men? Like anyone else, they have their own interests. Maybe there is a huge age difference, if a priest is 65, and you’re 28, you don’t remember the old days or other things he does. As long as the priest is nice and professional, that’s all that you can really expect.
