For those unfamiliar, an “avatar” is just forum/social media lingo for the little profile picture that appears next to your user name. At the old CAF, avatars were optional, and they had a storehouse of religiously-themed avatars to choose from. In fact, I think it was only after you moved up in the membership rankings where it became an option to upload your own avatar.
Here at the new CAF, the avatars play a much larger role as they are used as visual shortcuts to point to specific users. If you don’t pick one, the system just automatically makes the first character of your username your avatar and gives it a color background.
To change your avatar, simply click on your default avatar at the top right and then select the “gear” icon to go to your preferences. On that screen, you can scroll to the bottom and the last option is “profile picture”. Click on the pencil/edit icon next to the picture and a box will then pop up giving you the option to:
- Go with your “system assigned profile picture.” (i.e. the first character of your username)
- Use the “Gravatar” linked to the email address you used to sign up for CAF. *
- Upload a custom picture.
The custom picture can literally be whatever you want it to be (though I’m sure CAF reserves the right to step in if someone uses something inappropriate). When you click the “upload” button, it will pull up the box for you to find a picture file on your computer. Whatever picture you select, it will automatically center it for you. So it would be best to crop your desired picture into a square before you upload it to ensure that it displays the way you want it to.
*If you don’t know what a Gravatar is, don’t worry about it.
For sites that are compatible with it, it basically gives a central location for you to upload and change your avatar across multiple websites.
