How to deal with media that have sacrilegious/blasphemous content

Hi all,

I was wondering if you see some content on Netflix or Wikipedia and it contains sacrilegious/blasphemous things, is it wrong to continue to use that medium? I would avoid such content of course, but view non-sacriligeous articles/films.

One specific example is House of Cards, a show that I liked. It showed an episode where the protagonist, an hard-hearted unrepentant defaces a statue of Jesus.
I’m not so sure I can watch the show again even if the scene was to portray a facet of a character.

For one, its not real, its a movie.

Two, a psychopath defacing a statue, is not defacing Jesus, but the statue.

Either way, its part of real life.

If the series bothers you, don’t watch it.

I liked House of Cards until this season.

Its been a let down with the real political race of the Republicans being more entertaining.

It is not immoral to continue to use the medium. You are not supporting the immoral action.

With regard to Netflix: not paying 8 dollars a month isn’t going to put them out of business. Furthermore, everyone who is watching immoral material on Netflix have themselves already paid for the service. So I think any cooperation here is extremely remote.

It gets worse and worse. A whole lot of movies these days use the Holy Name of Jesus as an expletive. I doubt that a Hollywood production company would last more than a few days if they used the name of Mohammed in a manner deemed sacrilegious by Muslims. Muslims take their religion and their prophet seriously and will demonstrate in large numbers if their prophet is not treated respectfully. I don;t see too many Catholics demonstrating against the use of Our Lord’s Holy Name in vain. Actually, in some Roman Catholic colleges, they stage irreligious plays. And one Roman Catholic priest, Father Greeley, has written novels where he has the characters use the word “Jaysus” as an expletive and no one seems to object. Do Muslims take their religion more seriously than do Roman Catholics?
