A good friend of mine from high school has recently been sharing a lot of Wiccan posts on Facebook. I’ve never really talked to her about religion, and we haven’t spoken in person since high school (about 4 years). I care about her, but I’m not sure how to initiate dialogue with her. I feel like if I try to talk her out of it, she’ll become angry with me or stop talking to me. On the other hand, I feel compelled to at least speak the Truth to her. I know that I sound weak and petty, but I can’t be silent on these posts anymore.

I was one of them. Don’t try anything classical. No offense but most of them (the younger the more) hate Christianity and Catholicism especially. Be an amazing friend and show her that you aren’t interested in burning witches and that it isn’t all about sin. If she engages you don’t respond to the actual question she asked but to the emotional question she asked. Pray for her.

She isn’t asking me questions, but is just posting Wiccan stuff on her wall. I’m worried for her, and don’t just want to ignore her.

I don’t think you’re going to get far with Facebook, honestly. But if you do want to try, ask her if she wants to discuss religion first, don’t go in heavy-handed. If she says yes, great, but don’t go straight in with evangelising. Ask her a question about Wicca and then compare it with Catholicism and go from there. If she says no, respect that and leave it.

But whatever you do, be respectful of her and her beliefs and where she is with those. It’ll make any dialogue so much easier.

If you don’t currently have a relationship with her you are going to have a hard time evangelizing her. As step 1, I’d focus on building your relationship.

As step 2, I’d ask questions rather than try to bring her to your side. How much do you know about Wiccan belief? Ask her about what she believes. Ask her why it appeals to her.

In order to evangelize you must be strong in your own faith otherwise you will be easily frustrated or worse. How strong do you feel in the faith?

I ageee w other posts. Make sure you are strong in your faith. Read Ephesians 5(?) it’s the one that has “put on your whole armor of God…”
Pray the St.Michael prayer.
You could say hi. I noticed your FB comments. What’s up? Are they WICCAN POSTS?
Depending on her response… What has got you interested in this? Somewhere, in Romans, it says, the church took pagan symbols and holidays and embraced them, to help the transition from pagan to Christian. Google what pagan symbols are used by the church. It says in Romans somewhere, we are to meet others where they are. Listen, respect, love, wait for an opening, whenever it appears.
Heavenly Father, the world is in chaos. Where You sent Saints to save souls from the pagan world, the evil us back. Protect this loving child of yours as he goes forward into battle. As You gave Peter the words to say on Pentecost, sweet Holy Spirit let Your love come out w every word Giuseppe says. Pull his friend back to You. Let it start a flood of Wiccans returning to You in church. InJesus Name
Amen

I don’t see why everyone expects the Christians to back down and be quiet about our beliefs and they call this “Christian love, hey, Christians where is it?”
Truth be told if she is your friend then you can be 100% honest with her and tell her that you think Wiccans things are dangerous, or wrong, or whatever you think of those things. Friends talk. If she doesn’t want to talk with you how come is it your fault and why would you want a friend who doesn’t like you?
But first talk with her honestly like with a friend, without trying to evangelize of anything. See if you two can be friends because if she says “talk about anything except Christianity” then the truth she is not interested in befriending you and that is just the way it is.

I would be 100% as worried as you are if not more. I’m warning you though that a lot of Wiccans (the younger the more and I can say this because I kind of was one) are very hostile towards Christianity. You are likely to turn her away. There’s an underlying emotional reason for turning to something like that. The reason is basically wanting a more liberal form of Christianity, or wanting to feel a little bit special, wanting a bit of flexibility, more liberal ethics (ie getting rid of sin), more focus on romanticism or more focus on feminism. It depends and each person is different. If you try to approach the subject, especially by telling her thinks like “Wicca is wrong/sinful/occult/insert negative term.” You won’t get to her. See the graph below? It is plotting hostility to Christianity over time. Since she is in her start phase she’s probably close to the peak. It generally takes a year or two before she’ll become more moderate in her views. I had this Protestant friend whom I found very very weird at the time (ie he believed in things like the Flat Earth theory) but who was very nice and sweet and non-judgmental to me. He preached a lot and I did find it very weird. I do consider that a guy a big reason for me turning away from that stuff but it took some time, maybe about 3 years. The point I’m trying to make is don’t be the stereotypical Christian she has in mind.

That being said your friend can be very glad she is your friend. It is very clear you care a lot about her. I’m not saying don’t talk to her about Christianity, I’m saying be careful how you do it. She’ll probably have a lot of misconceptions. She might turn away from that stuff in a year, or two, or three, or five or ten and you may have played a part in it. Don’t blame yourself if a conversation does not go well. Also, don’t neglect praying for her.

I agree. I used to work with a few of them. I’m a Massage Therapist and the whole new age thing is BIG in that field. There is a subtle hated of Christianity throughout it.

Pray and live the faith…that is the best way to evangelize. In my experience, people who are into wicca, new age etc like the fact that those religions give them power (magic)…they like that and it’s hard to convince someone to give it up for a life of serving and denying oneself (Christianity).

Nice psychoanalysis. You sure you don’t want to replace Massage Therapist with Psychological Therapist in there?

lol! I actually did consider studying psychology when I was younger :). In all honesty though, as much as I like massage and think it has a place in helping people, I grow increasingly weary of the New Age focus and pseudoscience that has infiltrated the field. It makes me sad but I do know a few Christians in the field and I’ve learned to lean on them for support and to work in purely clinical environments (ones that don’t do Chakra balancing or Reiki etc)

I don’t have any advice per say on how to evangelize your friend beyond doing it in person.

I would highly advise not to do it through email or through messaging. 4 years is a lot of time that has gone by, especially after high school where young adults become independent and have new experiences. Make the effort to meet up with her. Speaking face to face is far more personable and it really shows that you care if you reach out in person.

With prayer; with gentleness and prayer; with charity and prayer; with fraternity and prayer; always with prayer, not for correction, but for God"s blessings on them so they feel the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, find Truth, and come into His Light.

Pax et bonum!
