So, my twenty-something is in her first apartment. Shares a 2BR with another young professional woman. It’s (just) in her budget, which is a MIRACLE in the SF Bay Area. She loves it.

But roommate just got transferred to NY, so now daughter needs to find another income-qualified roomie fast, or find another apartment to move into. Either one poses issues-- she’d really prefer to just live with other women, she’d really prefer they not be marijuana smokers, not be loud partiers, and not be the type to bring strangers back to the apartment.

How does one do such a thing? She attends Mass but hasn’t really settled into a parish “home” yet, much less connected with a young adult group.

I’m open to any and all brilliant suggestions, including, “Hey!!! My niece needs an apartment starting next month! Let’s exchange information!”

Thanks!

-Craigslist with specifics put in VERY blunt language

-Asking a priest to put out the word at his parish

-Local parish Facebooks

-Parish prayer chain emails (often managed by groups that do knitting or quilting or Knights of Columbus)

First,
  • Pets or No Pets
  • Utilities/Wifi/Fees (Garbage etc)
Second,
  • Geographical region/area for public transportation in case vehicle breaks down should be roughly chosen (seeking in _____ area of _____ )
  • Sexual preference mentioned and if same is expected
  • Lease duration AND if landlord would authorize a replacement tenant if things don’t go smooth
Next,
  • Washer/Dryer on site, coin operated and such

Make all these things visible, 1 line each, and a message stating “if most can be accommodated except for something expressed here, still message me in case I need more results” or something of the like.

Right, no she understands the mechanics of an apartment listing. 🙂

The bigger problem is (in the San Francisco Bay Area) finding a roommate who won’t be shocked by someone who actually believes all that “Catholic stuff,” objects to marijuana smoking on the premises, objects to roommate bringing a random hookup back to the apartment, etc… 😶

San Fran prices out those on disability in most areas. Good luck.

I lived in san José and interviewed with a lot of roommate wanted. It was difficult finding a match in values.

I wouldn’t just limit it to asking at parishes, I’m sure a lot of other people of faith would have similar preferences.

It’s more stats than interviews to some, more interviews than stats to others. It’s a good idea to jot down a list of bad experiences most people have, like the MTV sitcoms (real world, Jersey shore) if stats match.

Q1: How often do you have company, and what do you do (when visits occur)?

Q2: Are you a couch potato? Do you have to be in the living room watching home shopping networks hourly?

For younger people, the funnier the question, the better you might get along. Surveys are a good way to break ice, e-harmony kinda tried to prove that…
