I think I made many foolish decisions that sabotaged my life and which I keep regretting.

I am really wondering how to gain wisdom. I no longer want to make any decision I will regret ever again.

I was recently confirmed this month and thought confirmation may make me wiser and perhaps even give me some special abilities I didn’t have before, but so far I haven’t been able to notice a huge difference. I was able to break some bad habits that plagued me for years but I don’t know if it was my faith and resolution or some special graces received at confirmation or both that did it.

It was both - grace builds on nature; supernatural grace all the more.

Since you were recently confirmed; ask the Holy Spirit to awaken in you the gift of Fear of the LORD.

According to Proverbs 9:10, it is the beginning of wisdom.

I am really wondering how to gain wisdom.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him.” James 1:5

A prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours reads;

Father of love, hear our prayers. Help us to know your will and to do it with courage and faith. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Simple. You pray to God for wisdom. It also helps to pray that you may remember to use this wisdom in your day to day life.

I’ve done this as well.

I’ve prayed to God for the Gift of Wisdom.

Here is an article from The Catholic Spirit website regarding the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit, for more information in case anyone would like to take a look at it:

You will find wisdom by reading the Sacred Scriptures. Read the Bible. When reading the gospels pay careful attention to the details. Every time you read a passage you will glean more from it. The Scriptures will give you the answers on how to live, how to forgive, how to speak, how to think, etc. You will notice that before Jesus did anything, He always prayed. Do the same. Pray to the Holy Spirit before you do anything, but especially when you have to make important decisions in life. The Bible is a treasure chest of wisdom. You also should read the Book of Wisdom (Not found in Protestant Bibles)

Above all, read the gospels. But here is the first chapter of the Book of Wisdom:

You can pray for discernment and wisdom. Detachment also plays a role. A lot of times when we pay much attention to others and to the world we end up making mistakes. The more we focus on God the clearer our thinking.

You have received many good answers, and by asking questions you’re putting yourself on the path to wisdom…

…pray to the Holy Spirit that he may illumine the eyes of your heart…

…continue on your path and be attentive…

…prayers for you brother/sister in Christ.

Greetings, and Praised be Jesus Christ!

The truth is, you do have all the gifts of the Holy Spirit Himself within your deepest center… There, in the deepest point of your being, is the “holy of holies” within you and the Presence of the Most High dwells therein.

To put it plainly, most of your life has been one lived and moved and conducted according to your “ego” (or false “self”) and not according to who you are in Christ (as we are all guilty). We habitually did things opposed to God and His Will and became accustomed to it. However, this desire you now have “burning” within you is the inspiration of God in you to “hunger and thirst for righteousness.” You have a clear desire to never “make any decision [that you] will regret ever again.” This comes not of yourself, but of God… from the Holy Spirit within. If this desire becomes purified into more of a “I desire not to ever sin again because God is so beautiful, loving, and good…” you do well.

This holy yearning you have is leading you toward a much more fuller life in Him and, consequently, the Wisdom of God. However, as I briefly mentioned above, your life needs to be re-oriented and re-structured according to God’s Being… and become habit day in and day out. Your cooperation is absolutely necessary. Don’t beat yourself up too much, however, as there is a need to be more receptive and quiet in order to “listen” to God’s direction within you. All Good comes from God; even your cooperation with Him is a grace from Him. However, it ought to be a consolation knowing that this holy desire you appear to have is very pleasing to God.

As someone has stated above “Fear of God” is the “beginning of Wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). This is the guide for you toward a fuller participation in the Wisdom and Providence of God. Fear of God being a reverence and esteem for God and, thus, you will then find more understanding in the obedience to his commands, precepts, ordinances, and decrees.

I encourage you to increase your prayer life and the reception of Confession and Communion. Even if you’re not in Mortal Sin, still goto Confession habitually to confess disordered desires, thoughts and movements of your soul. Humility and trust in God is key. Goto Mass as often as you’re able. Seek a holy spiritual director as well; one will be of great benefit for you as it has been for all the Saints.

PS: seek to desire God Himself as He Is and not for anything He can give you…

Go in peace! Wisdom is being revealed to you.

Humility.
Realize how much you still have to learn.
Listen and read more than you opine
