How are saints declared patron of a specific cause or occupation?

I work for a non-catholic realtor. I have been looking for a patron saint for her as a meansof opening a dicussion about the Church. Catholic.org has a list of saints that can be searched by many catagories including occupations/professions. Per their search engine, there are no patron saits for realtors.

Now in the US at least, it is very common to bury a statue of St. Joseph in your yard and pray a novena to him when selling/buying a house. There are several saints of the Curch who recommend parying to St. Joseph for real estate transactions including St Theresa of Avila, and St Andre Bessette.

Iwould like to find out how to start the process of getting St Joseph declared as the patron of realtors.

St Joseph is the patron of “house hunters”. The term “realtor” is fairly new, this patronage pre-dates that term

Burying St Joseph is a superstitious thing, it is not something that is encouraged.

There is no “formal process of patronage”, it arises out of the devotion of people, the way a Saint lived or died, etc.

One should not bury a statue of St. Joseph. Place the statue in your home as a reminder and to honor him, but say prayers for his intercession in selling a home.

But in answer to the OP question, I Am not sure they are actually declared. I think that word does get around on who to pray to for certain intentions based on the life of the saint. If you read any books about the lives of the saints, it sometimes becomes clear why they are called upon.

St. Joseph, as head of the holy family is called upon for all things involved in the home and caring for one’s family. Employment and selling or finding homes would be natural.

On a side note, I often call on him when I am doing a handymam project at home and run into difficulty. He does help me figure out the problem so I can complete my task. 🙂

There are orgs for Catholic attorneys, Catholic physicians, Catholic nurses, Catholic executives, etc. I’ve thought it would be great for there to be a St Joseph’s Guild of Catholic Real Estate Professionals.
