So I don’t want to get into details, but I don’t always attend mass. Sometimes its because I can’t get there and I can’t drive and my parents sleep in and I forget. I know the best answer is to go to Church, but instead of that, there is got to be a better answer than to do nothing. What would be the best way to improvise a mass in your bedroom or something? Thanks.

As you imply Mass can’t be substituted at home. The only way to fulfill the obligation is to attend Mass. In saying this to answer your question I’d say if you have EWTN you can watch their daily Masses.

What I really mean is like is there a way that will make it better than doing nothing. I can see watching the mass online would be good. I wasn’t sure if you could like implement it with all the readings or something. Just want to do something if I can’t get there.

I understand that I mean what is the best way possible to get it as close or something like that, almost like an adoration where there is no priest.

Is it not possible for your parents to take you to attend a Saturday Vigil Mass? Or is there a later Mass on Sundays that you could attend?

Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word

Make a spiritual communion → the prayer in bold type on this page

Watch the Mass on EWTN as (name removed by moderator) said, read the days Readings slowly and prayerfully, make a spiritual communion and remember to keep the day Holy in general and appropriate rest.

Thank you so much, it is just my brother has baseball games so we can’t always make it. It gets complicated.

CCC #2183
""If because of lack of a sacred minister or for other grave cause participation in the celebration of the Eucharist is impossible, it is specially recommended that the faithful take part in the Liturgy of the Word if it is celebrated in the parish church or in another sacred place according to the prescriptions of the diocesan bishop, or engage in prayer for an appropriate amount of time personally or in a family or, as occasion offers, in groups of families."120 "

#120 comes from canon lay # 1248 §2 - "If it is impossible to assist at a eucharistic celebration, either because no sacred minister is available or for some other grave reason, the faithful are strongly recommended to take part in a liturgy of the Word, if there be such in the parish church or some other sacred place, which is celebrated in accordance with the provisions laid down by the diocesan Bishop; or to spend an appropriate time in prayer, whether personally or as a family or, as occasion presents, in a group of families. "

I understand that families do things together and you are dependant on your parents to drive you. But going to a baseball game as you know is not a grave or serious reason to miss Mass. So, for this reason I wonder if your parents and yourself could not attend a different Mass - the Saturday Vigil or one later on on Sunday. I assume a baseball game would not take up all of Sunday?

And you also said in your first post, I think, that sometimes your parents sleep in - perhaps on the Saturday you could ask to go to the Vigil Mass?

Or is there a nearby relative or neighbor or fellow parishioner whom your family knows can take you to Mass?

To miss Mass without sinning it has to be either physically or morally impossible. Difficulties doesn’t cut it, nor does inconvenience.

CCC #2181 “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor.119 Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.”

You need to bring this up with your parish priest and see what he says. He may be able to dispense you from your obligation to attend Mass, he also may not. But you should still speak with him and explain your circumstances. I’m assuming here you are over the age of 13?

The thing is it is just on me because my parents have to bring my brother to a game or my parents tell me I have to do homework and that that is all I can do. I feel depressed sometimes because I just feel like I am locked in my house alot of the time.

It’s fine to say any prayers you like at home, any time, to try to make a day special when you can’t get to Mass because you don’t have transportation.
You can
  • read the readings at home and do Lectio Divina (you can look up on line how to do this)
  • say a Rosary, the Divine Mercy chaplet, or any prayer you like
  • meditate on Christ’s Passion, on the Holy Mysteries, or on Jesus in the Eucharist (you can probably find a live video of the Blessed Sacrament online to look at if you like, though it’s not necessary)
  • make a Spiritual Communion (there are acts of Spiritual Communion online at EWTN and other websites)
If you don’t want to spend a whole hour, try spending a half-hour.
Jesus would be very pleased to see you “making the Sabbath day holy” in your home.

One time a couple years ago I couldn’t go to Mass when I planned because there was an ice storm and I arrived at church to find Mass was cancelled, so I went home and did a Holy Hour with Spiritual Communion instead.

I’m truly sorry you feel like that and things are difficult for you at home.

We understand that your parents take your brother to a game, and from this I assume your family only has one car.

Does your parish not have any other Mass times?

Perhaps your homework could be done on the Saturday, or after you have been to Mass?

We are trying to find solutions for you so you can attend Mass, & receive Jesus - we’re not trying to make things more difficult for you or make you feel worse about your situation. But Mass is just such a huge obligation for us Catholics, which is why we are suggesting other alternatives for you to raise with your parents and also speak with your priest.

As the other people are saying, see if there’s some other way you can get to Mass like ride with someone. But if it’s not possible, then just look forward to the day when you will be able to transport yourself or live closer to a church that you can walk to.
And I hope you will be just as interested in going to Mass when it is available to you 🙂

Thank you. Honestly I do not know but I am unsure of everything.

I feel like God is making my life more complicated, if he wanted me to come to mass then why is he making it so hard? That’s my biggest struggle.

Well, this is really a question you should ask God and then ponder it in your heart and he very well might let you know why.

But sometimes God makes things like Mass difficult for a while so that we value the Mass more when we are able to attend. There’s a tendency to take Mass, and God, for granted quite often.

Sometimes God also tests people by making things difficult to see if they will be faithful to him. This happens all through the Bible.

And sometimes when someone really is trying to be holy and do everything to please God, Satan will try to jump in and mess up their plans and it’s just a matter of persevering.

Life is difficult, that’s just how it is. We must always persevere and love God even through difficulties.

God permits things, for His reasons and we may never know what these were in this life. But these trials and tribulations can be put to good use by us in strengthening our Faith and Trust in Him, by praying Acts of Faith and Hope and Love each day and patiently enduring them until things change.

He does want you to come to Mass. He expects your parents to fulfill their obligations for Sunday Mass not just for themselves but for you too. God has given them free will, and these are decisions they have made.

You can politely and respectfully suggest things to your parents, otherwise pray as we suggested, offer up to God this suffering of yours in not being able to attend Mass when you want to, and pray for your parents to change their minds and take everyone to Mass.

It sort of is. He is putting so many road blocks in the way. Like if you want us to believe and feel like your the best stop making it so hard for us.

So I don’t want to get into details, but I don’t always attend mass.
How old are you?

Most of us are spoiled in that we have opportunity & means to go to Mass a lot more often than we care to.

My advice to you is to pray the Mass as best you can whenever you have the opportunity, when your parents do take you.

Those other times, pray. Watch daily Mass on YouTube & pray along using your imagination as if you are there.

& there are lots of resources about our faith on the interweb. Keep digging. Learn as much about the faith as you can.

Dig into the Saints. Learn how they lived their lives in imitation of Christ & contemplate how you can do the same. St Bernadette Soubirous, St Therese, & Mother Teresa are some of my favorites.
