During Communion, ask Jesus to enter your heart & soul spiritually. Pray! It’s not theologically complicated at all.How does one have a spiritual Communion (as opposed to a sacramental one)?

Yes, you are called to ask for Spiritual Communion if you are in a state of mortal sin.Can you ask for Spiritual Communion in a state of mortal sin? (Not that I am in a State of Mortal sin.)
When you are in a mortal sin state, you are not to receive Eucharist and therefore should have spiritual communion with Jesus to get the grace to move you towards confession and reconciliation.
