My husband, of 13 yrs, and I are going through a very tough time…me more than he.
He has caused much pain and distance due his parenting style.
Any suggestions on how to begin healing.
blessings and thanks to all

I don’t know your situation or anything particular about you relationship but my gut feeling is to say:

Seek some form of marriage counselling; whether it be with your local priest or parish or something else. Internet forums can only give you so much advice; they can’t fix a rift in a relationship.

Go to counselling as you would go to a doctor; at the first sign of any symptoms; do not wait until you have a serious fever, hallucinations and your foot has fallen off! There is no shame in asking for help and advice; too many couples leave it too late to go to counselling because they assume it is only for ‘problem couples’ or extremely dysfunctional families. In reality, by the time a couple becomes extremely dysfunctional, not even counselling can save them.

As soon as a rift forms in a relationship it has to be addressed and confronted, you cannot ignore it or just pray for it to disappear.

I hope you receive the help and advice you need (even if you don’t know it yet). It is always better to be safe than sorry, even if your relationship is in no discernible difficulties.

I tend to agree with the idea of trying counseling.

See if your diocese or a nearby one has *Retrovaille *retreats. This program is for married couples who are having trouble, even very serious troubles in their marriage. It helps them to heal their relationship and deal more harmoniously with their conflicts.:

Here is its website
