I would love to have St. Joseph as my patron, how do I do that? Can we chose our patron saint?

If you have a saint’s name or derivative of a saint’s name, you have a patron with that name I think, but there’s no reason not to choose a particular saint who is an inspiration to you, to intercede for you.
It isn’t either/or. All the saints are our family, our brothers and sisters, and all of them will love and intercede for any of us.

God bless you, Trishie 🙂

Taking any saint as your patron is fine.

There’s no set ‘way’ to do it. It’s rather like taking a new person to be your friend - you just go up to them, say ‘hi’, ask questions if you have any, tell them what’s on your mind, and take it from there.

If you like St Joseph you may want to look up some of the many prayers, litanies, chaplets etc that have been composed in his honour, and say any of ‘em that strike you. Just do a google search on "St Joseph prayer’.

And down the track as your devotion to him grows you may want to look into getting a medal of St Joseph to wear or a picture or statue to have in your home.

O blessed Joseph, faithful guardian of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ, protector of thy chaste spouse, the virgin Mother of God, I choose thee this day to be my special patron and advocate and I firmly resolve to honor thee all the days of my life. Therefore I humbly beseech thee to receive me as thy client, to instruct me in every doubt, to comfort me in every affliction, to obtain for me and for all the knowledge and love of the Heart of Jesus, and finally to defend and protect me at the hour of my death. Amen

Hi reff. The title “Patron Saint” commonly refers to the saint you were named after (although, I realize that not every Christian bears a saint’s name). “Patron” can also refer to a specific title within the Church.

St. Joseph, for example… has been named… “Patron of the Universal Church”. Having said this, though… I believe it is perfectly fine for you to adopt St. Joseph as your own “Patron”. I don’t think there are any rules saying that you must be named after him.

My “Patrons” are our Blessed Mother, St. Therese and St. Veronica. However, I have a whole bunch of saints… to whom I have special devotions… and I pray to all of them… and consider them all “special patrons”… even though, I’m not named after them.

That is the really AWESOME thing about The Communion of Saints. They are there… as our family in Heaven! Our own brothers and sisters! 🙂 And we can “call” on any of them… at any time… to pray for us! Hope this helps! God bless.
