How To Make a Good Confession?

I was baptized and comfirmed this year on Easter Vigil. No one never really explained how to confess. I haven’t been to confession yet and feel that it’s about time I should go. I am scared and so nervous! I’m not really sure what to say. Is there a prayer or any words that must be said on my part when I enter the confessional? Any prayer or words that I need to say when I am done confessing or when I am about to leave? Do I need to make the sign of the cross? How do I go about it all? Do I just list off my sins and then listen to the priest? I mean, what exactly is supposed to take place in confession? Will the priest say any words or prayer in which I must respond back? Also, is it wrong to bring a list of my sins to read from during confession? I have read somewhere that is was wrong to do that.

Sorry for all the quetions! I just like to do things right!

Tell the Priest this is your first confession and that you need help. He will tell you what to do. When it comes to sins remember just list type and amount. Do not explain. If he has questions he will ask. If you have questions ask. But if you have not set up a time to go to confession and are going at a regular time be mindful of those who may be in line after you. Do not monopolize the confessional.
 
One is obliged to confess all mortal sins in number and kind (and circumstances that change the sin…like the person you murdered was your brother)

If one forgets a mortal sin…it can be absolved indirectly with the other sins…but one needs to confess it if remembered in ones next confession.

Venial sins need not be confessed (they can be forgiven in various ways)…but it is good to confess at least some …in what is called “frequent confession” …like go every week, or every two weeks or every month…

Also since you were not baptized until Easter…(I assume it was not a conditional baptism…) one does NOT really confess any sins from *prior *to baptism. They are not really matter for confession…they have been washed away …when you were given new life in Christ in Baptism.

Yeah, I was gonna give the one from the Knights’ website. Theirs have helped me out alot. I am also thinking of doing the two formation programs they have. After all, part of our main emphasis is lay leadership. 🙂

But yes, any of the pamphlets on there will help. 👍

I have been in your shoes before and I know what is like to feel lost when it comes to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is a difficult sacrament at times. The thing to remember is always be sincere when you are confessing and have a contrite heart and confession will work itself out. If you are new to the sacrament just tell the priest you are new and ask him to help you out. If he is a decent and passionate priest he will go out of his way to do whatever he can to help. He is the first one to tell you that confession is not easy.
