Usually it means once a day for 9 days.
If it’s something different there will usually be a notation of some sort that will tell you how it should be prayed.

If a day is missed it doesn’t mean your prayer won’t be answered. It just means you may not have been disciplined enough to remember to say it. So, if you like, continue saying it the next day and add another day!
