How to pray the rosary

Help! I went through RCIA and became a full-fledged CAtholic on Easter, 2007. I’ve just volunteered to teach a 7th grade Cathechism class and I have to teach the students to pray the Rosary.

I cannot do this. I’ve never ‘gotten the hang of it.’ I can say the prayers without any problem but I always get lost when going along on the beads and I end up halfway through when we have finished or I go around 1 1/2 times.

I need to teach them correctly, but I’m panicked. One person told me that for each prayer, you move to the next bead but that doesn’t seem to work for me. I saw a website (rosary-center.org/howto.htm) on how to pray the rosary, but it shows skipping ahead several beads when going from First Mystery and Our Father to the 10 hail marys.

I have 2 weeks to get this down. Can anyone enlighten me? I need to do this right!
 
Practice every day(out loud, or with somebody else if possible)! I agree, it can be very tricky sometimes, especially if you haven’t got the hang of counting off and on top of that you have to contemplate the mysteries!!!

I said the Rosary on the drive to school today with my sis in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows (today :)) and believe me you think you’ve got it down, then you have to say it out loud with somebody else who keeps saying the wrong thing or keeps quiet… But you’ll do fine with practice and with prayer that you’ll do well. Also use a pamphlet if you’re not sure! And you’re in my prayers! Have fun:thumbsup:

Thank you so much. I have printed out something and have the link from the previous post, so I can practice it daily. We don’t have class next week, so I have two weeks to practice. I’m thinking maybe some of the students may not even know the prayers, so we can work on those, too. I’m thinking I could even use the video to teach it to them, thereby also reinforcing it in me!

HAHA. Well, thank you, but I must admit that I did not go skipping and jumping into the office to beg to do this :D. Fr. had made an announcement two weeks ago about all the classes for which they still needed teachers. I was then out of town and in mass last weekend, he said they still needed two teachers or those classes would have to be cancelled. I just couldn’t let that happen. I’d always heard about Catholic guilt but who knew it could happen to one so new to the faith:eek:?

Anyway, the kids are nice and hopefully, I can inspire them or at least not terrify them of their journey in Catholcism.

I recently came back to the Church after a hiatus of about 35 years. As part of my efforts to get back to the proper frame of mind, I started parying the rosary daily (OK, I miss sometimes). When I went to the Catholic Store to pick up my rosary, I also picked up a pamphlet Pray the Rosary, Catholic Book Publishing Corp, to make sure I was doing things correctly. This has several helps, and instuctions. In the long version, it has sciptural readings that help me keep track of where I am and to properly meditate on the specific Mysteries. Ir only cost $2 and I have seen a smaller format of the same pamphlet for $0.95 The pamphlet and my rosary stay togeather. I have the pamphlet in one hand and the rosary in the other. It takes about 40 minutes for me to say a rosary properly.

When I teach the rosary to my CCD calss later this year, I will be using this pamphlet.
 
don’t worry most of the kids will have trouble with the very same things. Ask your DRE for a good guide for them that is on one sheet of paper, not a booklet–there is a good one on newadvent.com for which I will post a link if I have time before church, but there should be one in their textbook as well.

The key is to shift the problem to them (the keeping track problem)

make a living rosary–light a candle in front of a statue of Mary and Crucifix. ring the children around it. As they pray they take turns, rotating around this table, as one person and then the next stops for the duration of each prayer.

Or simply stand them in a circle and pass a lighted candle (in safety glass not a taper), the one holding the candle says the next prayer. Or if you are concerned about safety (very wise with Jr Hi) pass a rose–pick up a real one from the grocery store, or a silk one from the dollar store.

you can keep them seated at their tables or desks if that is better in your space, and simply have them take turns reciting each prayer. Or have row one or table one pray the first decade together, and so on. Have someone proclaim the scripture verse for each decade beforehand as well.

Have them make rosaries, or at least rosary bracelets. I use just pony beads, hemp string or rawhide cord for bracelets, and buy 4-way medals in a cross shape from Autom.

We don’t tell you about Catholic guilt in RCIA because we don’t want to scare you. There is nothing wrong with sharing as much of your faith journey as you feel comfortable, even the fact that you yourself are still learning the rosary.
 
you are being sent to teach BECAUSE of your limitations, not in spite of them. You will impart a true spirit of Humility in doing so… which is so essential in praying the rosary!!
