How To Put Together A Tenebrae Service

I was wondering if anyone here has put together a Tenebrae Service for their Parish. I know basically what I want to use during the service, but I’m looking into some specifics, i.e. music selections for the service (if any) and specific readings that work well for the service.

Any help I could get would be much appreciated! God Bless you all!

Our Schola did an abbreviated form of Tenebrae last night. Here is the worship aid. It’s in a ready-to-print booklet form. Here is the link to our website that has all the chants in mp3 for practice (go under Multimedia–>Audio Recordings, then scroll down to the Tenebrae section). We will be uploading a better version of the O Vos Omnes with all the parts. The one on there is pretty bad because it was done on the fly during flu season. We will also be uploading the organ score soon.
 
Our parish is planning a tenebrae service for the first time. My problem is that I am really into the lectionary and sacramentary for The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. My fear is that a tenebrae service on Wednesday of Holy Week will keep people from attending the rich liturgies of Triduum–the heart of our faith. In addition, since we have a rather small music ministry, by the Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday, voices will begin to show signs of overuse! Why duplicate something that is already being celebrated in the Triduum?
 
My parish is planning a Tenebrae service for Good Friday evening. What is essential to a Tenebrae service? We are planning to use the psalmody and reading for Evening Prayer of Liturgy of the Hours, pluse the triangular candlabra, the extinguishing of the candles, the loud clap, relighting the one candle, and the Lamentations of Jeremiah. Can a contemporary Tenebrae service be planned with these elements and retain the custom? We will use be using Taize chant, too. Must we include the Office of Readings? Is there any thing else that is essential to Tenebrae. Thanks for your assistance.
 
We have been doing Tenebrae for three years. Church Publishing (Episcopal publisher) has a book entitled “In the Shadows of Holy Week the Office of Tenebrae”. All the reading, prayers and psalms are containied in it. The psalms are set to simple plain chant. It also gives some history and guidelines for conducting the service. Done in its entirety the service is 90 minutes long. It’s quite beautiful.

I am doing a Tenebrae (abbreviated) service for the first time for the students of Campus Ministry. I wanted them to experience something different. So many of our beautiful devotions and traditions are gone by the wayside. You have all given such helpful information and personal thoughts. I look forward to our experience. Bless your Holy Week.
 
We couldn’t get one ready this year, but next year we will definitely have one.
