I’m about to start volunteering at my local parish to teach middle school students. I would like to show them the joy I experience as a direct result of my faith, but I also know that if I go too “over the top,” it can be a turnoff. Any suggestions?

They wont be turned off. They will be amazed. Follow your curriculum to the letter, and don’t put in any personal stories until you are more accustomed to the method of teaching put forth by your DRE.
Thank you for stepping forward to teach.

Don’t just tell the story, be the story. How you do that is up to you, but be yourself. After all, teens can smell hypocrisy and bogus (to use their term) from a mile away.

Shalom and good luck.

Live it publicly

Let you’re JOY shine through

You’ll be fine. As the new Youth Ministry Director at our parish I wouldn’t be able to do my job without volunteers. Share any concerns with the YM director and let him/her guide you. Get familiar with the curriculum of the program they’re using and follow the lead catechist for your group.

When sharing your faith journey with them remember they are on their own journey and that needs to be encouraged.

PianistClare is right. But I would mix those examples with works outside of the parish like a town soup kitchen or help in other areas such as storm disaster relief, or helping the elderly or handicapped in those conditions. With discrimination these days so prevalent, the vulnerable are also those who’s religion causes them much hardship among the biased. We should help them in any way we can also. Mending division is also our mandate.
