How to talk to a JW

I have been dialoging with a Jehovah Witness for about a year. He comes around every so often and talks for about 20 minutes. Sometimes it’s good because we talk about our different beliefs, but most of the time it’s a “Yes, you did. No, I didn’t.” kind of exchange.

I am learning more and more about their beliefs, thanks to CA and you people.👍 My question is whether it is better to talk to him about his beliefs its inconsistencies or talk to him about the Catholic faith?

From what I understand, you need to talk about them and their faith. I had a book, loaned it out, never got back kind, that took passages from the Watchtower magazine. The watchtower parts first quoted talk about not listening to false prophets, calls itself a prophet and then this book goes on to show the many false prophecies throughout the years.

You need to talk to them about both because they usually have little or erroneous information about their own religion and about Catholicism.

A friend of mine had a visit from a JW last week and, as luck would have it, two of his friends who are also good apologists were there visiting. They talked to this guy for about 45 minutes and charitably, but in no uncertain terms, they pointed out the inconsistencies in JW beliefs and also what Catholics really believe. My friend said this fellow kept saying “I never knew that’s what Catholics really believe” and “No one ever told me this before.” He finally had to excuse himself because his wife was waiting out by the curb. He was given one of our church bulletins and told to come visit anytime. Please pray for this man and his family that the Spirit has planted a seed that will lead him to the true Faith.
 
I’ve been having internet conversations with a JW friend from back home, and we’ve gotten some good progress. We both think that our own religions are greatly misunderstood by those who don’t belong to it (though I cannot affirm that it is true of his). I have told him how much I love my Church and explained the notions of mysteries and the Trinity to him. As we all know, apologetics are useless without a lot of prayer.

One of the main concepts of their religion is that we should measure our religion to see if it fits w/the Bible. Sort of a Sola Scriptura variant I guess. I always work to show them that they are not in line w/ what the Bible teaches. One really good thing about being Catholic is that we can show historically that the early church was Catholic. your friend probably doesn’t know who Ignatius of Antioch was, but I like to start right there to show that Catholic wasn’t some late invention, but that it was what the early church called itself to designate the real Christianity from all the cults & heresies. It’s all there…all we can do is pray for them, be charitable, and tell 'em the truth while we live it out.
 
I have been dialoguing with JW’s for years. I have many of their materials and lots of Christian materials and apologetics on them…and others:)

For what it’s worth, I would find a common ground…i.e. Jesus and talk about Him. Talk about the differences we have…fully God vs little god…you can spend hours and days trying to talk them about Jesus. But in the end they need to see that they have a completely different Jesus than we do. I’d also discuss the resurrection, the Holy Spirit and maybe the trinity. I’d leave off of the table things that will offend or push away the JW’s from a discussion. You don’t need to bash them over the head with how many times they were wrong with setting dates. Or inconsistancies with the NWT, blood transfusions…or alot of things like that. Those may come up at a later time, but not initially…just my thoughts…
