How was Mary conceived without sin?

My younger brother left the church several years ago. He traded his Catholic faith for an evangelical belief. As a consequence his belief is based on scripture. In a recent conversation about Mary, his contention was that the scriptures point out in the gospels, Mary’s lineage to Adam, and since sin entered the world through one man Adam and Mary’s confession of her God being her Savior in the gospels (uncertain what verse he references), that the scriptures have no witness of Mary being born without sin.

I would really appreciate your help in responding. I am more than willing to do the work to improve my own understanding.
