How were the first several Popes chosen after the first Pope Peter?

I know how Pope’s are chosen now, but after Peter how were subsequent Popes elected? I doubt they had a college of Cardinals by the second century. I’ve subscribed to Popes in a year and we are now on Pope #4. Thank you for your help.
