When I talked to a sister about the vocation discernment and about my concern, I mentioned about I am living with my mother and it is my concern for leaving. Then the sister said you need to trust God that when one entered the convent/ monastery (or become priest or sister), God will take care of their Family members.
I also heard many said about it, but I do not understand and it is hard to understand. How will God take care of them?

For example, if I am not looking after and she has any accidents or disappear, how will she be saved?

Another example, if my mother also depends on my job and salary for her living, how will God help this? my dad passed away 2 years ago due to cancer, and asked me to take care of mother, and no one else will take care of her…

Much of these kinds of worries also stopped me to step forward for discernment even I keep on feeling God is calling me…

That is a good question. Perhaps it would help if you shared your concerns with a vocations director, or your priest? What you shared may very well be your vocation…to take care of your mother. Unless there is a satisfactory answer for you?

Shanishani, you wanted to know if all the above that you mentioned; finances, health, care of mother etc. if it was still okay to leave and go into a convent. I have to agree with the post by “Dorothy”. If your mother is that dependant on you, and you promised your father that you would take care of her, then the answer is that for the time being, she is your vocation.

That doesn’t mean that the time won’t come whereby you would be free to go into religious life, just not quite yet.

How old is your mother? Would she be able to take of herself, or does she really need someone to support her?

I had a similar situation. My spiritual director told me that sometimes God speaks to us through the circumstances of our lives.

You might ask the vocations director with the Poor Clares in Hanceville.

She would be glad to help you answer this concern.

For example, Mother Angelica left behind her mom, much to her mom’s displeasure and distress, but her mom could support herself.

I would ask the vocations director there. I don’t see a phone number, but the email for the V.D. is in the middle of the page.

Peace of Christ!

Take the time to care for your mother, living as close to religious life as you can. The patience and love will be excellent preparation for a life of self giving. Spoken from experience. I would actually not trust an Order who did not advise this. Care of family who are in real need?

So true! And, of course, with discernment to see if there are any other options.

To what kind of religious life are you being attracted? Caring for elderly parents is precious time spent with them. I wouldn’t exchange it for anything. You can always work on holiness in such a situation. Perhaps prayer to the Mother of Sorrows, and St John the Evangelist would be in order for the sake of discernment?
