How would the Orthodox and Protestant groups take this?

Formosus (a member here at CAF) and I were talking about the state of the TAC (Traditional Anglican Communion) and their applying for formal Communion with the Catholic Church. He made a good point that it would send a message to the Apostolic Churches of the East (EO and OO) if they were received into Communion with the Catholic Church and were allowed to maintain all of their traditions, practices, liturgy, etc.

I thought if Rome allowed them to be a sui iuris Church, they would allow them to be headed with their own Patriarch, possibly named the “Patriarch of Canterburry?” It sounds cool to me, but I don’t know the practicality of this. Obviously it would offend the Anglicans, but they cannot seem to get their act together.

Would the EO and OO take kindly to such a thing, were it to happen by the grace of God? Would this cause you and your respective hierarchies to look closer into reunification and see that the Catholic Church is serious about it?

Also to the “higher church” Protestants, would you all join the “Anglo” Church of the Catholic Church should formal Communion take place?

Just trying to get a feel for the idea. Also, if anyone knows more information about the status of the TAC and where they are at, feel free to post it.

Since they are firmly in the Western tradition, I believe the appropriate status would be as a Rite under the Latin Church, like the Ambrosian or Dominican Rite.

There are already Bishops in all the areas where the Anglicans are. You can’t usurp their authority.

Maybe a personal prelature would be possible in the interim until the existing Bishops all retire.

In the case with the Assyrian Diocese in CA coming into union with the Chaldeans, I’m fairly certain that they are keeping everything.

Why should it be any different for the West than the East?

Both the Ambrosian and Dominican rites have been pretty much surpressed, sadly. It would send a clear signal to Apostolic Churches in the East that they could maintain their Traditions (small t and big T).
