Is anyone here familiar with Small Compline in the HTM Prayer Book? I have been wondering for a while if I understand the instructions correctly. Go to page 23. I have two questions:
  1. When it says to say “the Troparion of the day, or the following,” what is "the following referring to? Is it just “O God of our Fathers…?” Or do you also replace “Adorned in the blood of Thy Martyrs…?”
  2. At the bottom of the page, it has “Theotokion” after “Both now.” So, do I say “Both now,” then the Theotokion for the day, then “By the intercession…?”
Thanks in advance. 🙂

Wouldn’t you be better off asking your priest, or the chanters at your church?

I don’t have that book, but it may be like the Byzantine Small Compline which has this pattern:

After the Our Father

1a. Kontakion of the feast, or

1b. Troparion of Saints Cyril and Methodius - Tone 4

2a. FridaysTroparion of the Saints - Tone 2
Kontakion of the Departed - Tone 8
Kontakion of the Saints - Tone 8
2b. Non-FridaysTroparion - Tone 4 (… God of our fathers …)
Troparion of All Saints - Tone 4 (… clothed with the blood or your martyrs …)
Kontakion of the Departed - Tone 8
Theotokion - Tone 8
3. Lord, have mercy. (40 times) …

I think they are giving you an option-use one of the troparia, either weekday or feast, or the group that is there. That group is Greek use for weekdays. Friday has a different order, Saturdays have the Hypakoi for Sundays, and Great Feasts use the Kontakion of the Feast. The book is not meant to be a Horologion, but rather for private prayer, and to provide a handy book for Sunday/Feast services in the parish.
