Where does humility begin? I have such a hard time with the sin of pride, and I was hoping for some advise.

Humility begins with the realization that all we have are from the grace of God.

All of our talents, strength, ability, intelligence, and good looking are the gifts from God.

With a grateful heart, we would humbly know there is nothing we can be boasting of.

The fact you realize your problem of pride is the beginning development of your humility.

God bless!

Pray that God will give you humility. However, be prepared for God to humble you (or allow you to humble yourself) in a harsh way (if that is what is necessary). Personally speaking, God allowed me to fall flat on my face (all by my own sinful choosing) and well, I am not the same. I wouldn’t say that I’m humble, but others have told me that I am. I just remember the reality of the kind of person I can be and realize that it is GOD who keeps me on the path toward holiness.

i recite the Litany of Humlity often.

im annoyed at myself for wanting to be like by others so i figured the litany could really help me.

True humility begins when we are aware of the One to Whom we owe thanks for our very existence. Scripture tells us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” So to be wise necessitates acknowledgement of - and awe-filled reverence for - our Creator. Humility flourishes when we rejoice in knowing that there is One Who knows us down to the smallest particle of our physical being, and Who knows what He has created us to be. This all, of course, harkens back to one of the first questions of the catechism: “Why did God make me?” Once we know the “why” of our existence, humility follows. Then prayer flows as the right (and supernaturally-aided) response to surrender ourselves to His designs.

I also “second” the praying of the Litany of Humility, written by Rafael, Cardinal Merry del Valle. 👍

Praying for humility is just about as fun as praying for patience and compassion. 😉 All great things, but goodness, asking for them is terrifying!

“Oh, Lord, grant me chastity and self-restraint…”

I find it helps, when I’m praying or doing something else good, and start to feel smug and self-satisfied, to offer it up. “God, I can’t do anything about this. I pray for help, and immediately start congratulating myself. Help. As Thou wilt and as Thou knowest, have mercy.”

The wonerful litany of humility is for private use only. For those who don’t have it, here it is:

O Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being loved,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being honored,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being praised,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the desire of being approved,
Deliver me, O Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of being despised,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged,
Deliver me, O Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected,
Deliver me, O Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I go unnoticed,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become as holy as I should,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
