Anyone else battening down the hatches?

What’s on your to-do list?

Got any good no-electricity meals?

We lived through Wilma, but I can’t recall exactly what we did.

I’m thinking that tomorrow morning we’ll go get some water, tuna, salmon, fruit, instant oatmeal, and batteries. Gotta get the cars tanked up too. We also need to pull in all the loose stuff outside.

Really happy we’re dealing with just a Cat 1.

Keep safe, all!

Here in SW Virginia we’re praying for it to come to us. We’re in the midst of a severe multi-year drought, and a good tropical depression would be invaluable. I hope it doesn’t do any damage to Fla. on its way. It looks like a small one, and maybe will not be too destructive down there. But it it has to hit, let it end up in our neck of the woods.

Hi Mizznicole. I am on the opposite coast (near Ft Lauderdale). We don’t expect to get hit directly, but we are preparing for tropical storm force winds and rain today and tomorrow.
Last summer, I posted my hurricane preparedness list here. If you have not already done so, please make sure your hurricane shutters are up, as well as bringing indoors everything that is not bolted or cemented down. That means all lawn furniture, plants, benches, equipment, etc. Even though it is projected to be “only” a category 1, it can cause significant damage, especially if there are flying objects involved.

Be safe, and be prepared. The very basics are water for at least 3 days (1 gallon of water per person per day, and 1/2 gallon per animal per day), canned foods (and a manual can opener), bread/bagels, peanut butter and jelly and other non-perishable items, a charcoal or propane grill (for outdoor use ONLY after the storm has passed) in case your electricity is out. Also, charge up all your cell phones before the storm hits. If you lose phone and power lines, you land-line phone may not work (especially if you only have a cordless phone).

I pray that the majority of the storm goes over the everglades and Lake Okeechobee. Come back after the storm and let us all know how you fared.

I live in Tampa Bay area, but 15 miles north of where the storm is to hit…BUT, our office building is right on the bay, so we’re watching closely here, and if it gets bad, we will not be coming in tomorrow or Wed…whenever it’s supposed to hit. I just pray it is uneventful!

But, my husband is into the whole buy-everything-in-sight-because-we-are-going-to-be-hunkering-down-for-awhile…I told him, I’m not hanging out eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and drinking warm water from the store. lol I said, I’ll call you when I’m in Jacksonville, at a nice spa…waiting for the storm to blow over.😃

Prayers for everyone here facing this storm!

Hi,

If you look at the projected path, where the Hurricane is supposed to come into a place called Charlotte Harbor? I work right on the harbor. We used to live there as well, but we’ve moved inland and north several miles to the next town.

At work right now, they’ve got all the shutters up and are testing the emergency generator. Getting all the emergency contact information updated and sent out.

Even though we’re farther north than we were the last time, Hurricane Charley, we’ve put new batteries in all the flashlights, shutters up on the windows, all the little things in the yard are either in the house or the sheds, at least three days of water and canned food. As far as the canned food goes, well, it’s certainly not the most nutritious stuff out there, but we stock up on Spagettio’s and the like. Lots of soup which can be heated in a pan over a little gas stove, gas for the stove, and the grill, a camping coffee pot for those of us who must have it first thing in the morning. Canned chicken, granola bars, etc. Oatmeal as well. I think, basically, anything that you can make on a stove, if you have a camping stove would work. And ice. It won’t keep forever, but it’s good to have for when the lights go out and you’ve still got food in the fridge. You can drop it in the cooler with the ice and eat that stuff first, before it goes bad.

We keep at least a weeks supply of food for the animals on hand as well.

An emergeny radio, and plenty of batteries for that and the flashlights. Sorry, that’s all I can think of at the moment.

Thought of something else. If you drink it, soda. Not too much because you can get dehydrated, but a little is nice to have on hand. As a variant to water, water, water.

A girl after my own heart. I can remember driving back to Naples from a conference in Tampa the day before Andrew hit and seeing all the traffic going the other direction.

Seriously, don’t forget a charcoal grill or a propane grill. That way you can have real food. You can always brew morning coffee and heat up other canned foods. We had a generator and that kept the frig running and the TV. That helped. But I am glad we moved farther north and doing have that problem any more.

We have batteries and water - stocked up on pantry items as well…not going anywhere tomorrow. School closed, NASA closed, my new job not starting…get ready to wait…

Maybe I’m being presumptuous, but Fay seems like a dud from where we are (Fort Myers). Nothin’ but drizzles! Looks like all the action is from Bonita on south. Guess part of me wanted to relive the hours of being pelted with the wind like during Wilma. Yeah, that’s nuts.

Did okay on supplies. But I forgot to grind the coffee - I sure hope the electric is on in the morning.

God bless, everyone! Keep safe! Thanks for the tips!

Unfortunately for us where I live, it is predicted to make a big left hook, and go west. No rain this time, I guess.
