I was reading C. S. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity” and read under the chapter on Christian Marriage that a wife promises to be obedient to her husband, and that he is the head of the family. I have not been able to find any references to this teaching in the Catechism. Where might I find a reference to this teaching?

Wives do not promise obedience to their husbands in the Catholic Marriage Rite. That is a 100% Protestant innovation, created by Henry VIII. That is why you cannot find it in the Catechism.

However, you will find the correct teaching regarding the relationship between husband & wife and Christ and the Church in the Catechism under the Sacrament of Marriage. Ephesians 5:24-32 is the Scriptural reference.

We teach our kids that the husband’s headship is religious only – the husband is “the head of the Church” within his family. All other questions are joint.

Try looking in the Bible, book of Ephesians, chapter 5

21 Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. 24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, 27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

the alternative leads to an androgynous marriage :whacky: .

Most countries, companies, groups and clubs put one person in unequaled authority over all other members in the group. They do so to unite the group in the direction all group members will be compeled to follow. Rather than having twelve leaders equally pulling the Church in twelve different directions, Jesus put one man, Peter, in unequaled authority over the other elleven Apostles and all those in His Church to unite His Church. We see this same uniting authority in the papacy today.

The reason America puts a president in unequaled authority over all other Americans is to unite America in the direction we go. American president Abraham Lincoln used the entire might of American military forces to fight those who wanted two men with equal ultimate authority on American soil. America has built a memorial to President Lincoln for his service to America in keeping our country united and strong.

Abraham Lincoln quotes Jesus in his “house divided” speech, which he gave preceding the American Civil War. [historyplace.com/lincoln/divided.htm](The History Place - Abraham Lincoln: House Divided Speech) Abraham Lincoln and Jesus say, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

Both Jesus and Abraham Lincoln compare uniting nations to the same fibre that unites a household. Unequalled authority is not evil. Unequalled authority in a nation or in a household unites nations and families.

Leaders must use their authority to serve the group rather than abuse such authority for self interests. Husbands must serve the family unite with the uniting authority Jesus wills them to have.

**NAB MARK 3:24 **

“If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”

NAB MAT 12:25

“A kingdom torn by strife is headed for its downfall. A town or household split into factions cannot last for long.”

Peace in Christ,

no actually that is incorrect. The wife should subject to her husband in all things, but because the husband and wife are “one”, they should discuss and consider all things together, because a good, wise Husband consider’s carefully his wife’s say on matters. The final word is the husband’s.

It’s not about being a overbearing jerk, its about God’s will, love, and trust.
Ephesians 5:23-25 (New American Standard Bible)

23For ([A](http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/#cen-NASB-29328A))the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the (**("http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/#cen-NASB-29328B"))head of the church, He Himself ([C](http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/#cen-NASB-29328C))being the Savior of the body.
24But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

25(D)Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and (E)gave Himself up for her,
