Hymnals: which one(s) do you use and why?

When my former parish in Austin bought RitualSong hymnals, they let us have their Red Worship III hymns (older translations). My PV, who was our Cathedral’s first rector, sent me to Austin to pick them up. Imagine hauling about 300 books in a little Honda. But, they were well worth it, compared to the OCP stuff we had inherited from the previous administration.

We used the hymnals for about three years until a new Administrator came in and put them in storage. He bought into the OCP garbage. He did, however, keep the old Flor y Canto, which had much better selections than the so-called “new and improved” version that was released four years ago.

My current parish is heavily into OCP, lock, stock and barrel. We use something horrid called Spirit and Song (which is little more than Protestant Praise Music) and the very vapid United in Christ hymnals, which have very little in the way of Traditional, Sacred Music. I pray that OCP will just go away, far away.
 
My parish uses the red Worship III hymnals as well. They have the versions for congregation which mostly only contain melody line and then the choir has the choral editions which contain the harmonies and descants. It’s not that much thicker, so I don’t know why GIA published two kinds. I like this hymnal - much more than the Glory and Praise and those OCP replacement hymnals (which a lot of parishes in my area have).

  2. Hymns for the Church year
  3. Liturgical Index
  4. Topical Index
  5. Hymns Which May be Sung in Canon
  6. Index of Composers, Authors and Sources
  7. Metrical Index of Tunes (Helpful if you find text that fit the readings for that Sunday, but don’t want the hymn melody, so you can find another that would fit well.)
  8. Index of Tunes
  9. Psalm Refrains Set to Music
  10. Index of First LInes and Common Titles
Most of these I find very helpful for me.

For the Psalmodies, we use Gelineau psalmodies.
