Just realized today is a holy day of obligation, Ascension Thursday. Since it was accidental is it even a venial sin or no sin at all?

Go directly to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

It was an accident, you’re not culpable.

Jim

Well, depending on your diocese, it may be celebrated on Sunday. It is in mine. Have you checked?

If they didn’t put it on Bulletin “THURSDAY” then you are fine.

In most dioceses in the United States, it is no longer a Holy Day of Obligation - the feast has been moved to Sunday. It is still a holy day in the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and Omaha.

You can look up your diocese website and check, or you could call your parish and ask.

Worcester. If you are in the North East, you should be at mass.

If it was accidental, and you were meaning to go, it wasn’t a sin; but tell the priest anyway, if it makes you feel better.

IMO, that would qualify as a venial sin.

Make an act of Contrition for failure to remain vigilant, pray Psalm 51, and rejoice in God’s Mercy.
