I am addicted to porn and obsessed with sex, is it possible for me to become a Catholic or go to heaven?
I am struggling to overcome the lust, but I am trying.
God is pleased with your efforts to overcome lust! Relentlessly and stubbornly continue trying. Rebel against the Satan!
It is possible to be Catholic and go to heaven when struggling with lust and porn. It’s extremely common for people, especially guys, to struggle in this area.
Get rid of every near occasion of sin. Get rid of all porn or access to porn. Install an internet filter on your computer (such as k9 which is free
www1.k9webprotection.com/) and give the password to someone else.
In case you don’t know, I think it would be useful to give you a summary of the Catholic Church’s teaching regarding mortal sins. A sin is a mortal sin when three conditions are present: grave matter, full knowledge (of the grave matter) or some sort of willful ignorance, and complete consent. Mortal sins are sins that would bring one to Hell if one died without having been forgiven of it. One may not licitly receive Holy Communion after having committed a mortal sin if that mortal sin has NOT been forgiven in the sacrament of Penance. The sacrament of Penance, when received properly (which entails confessing all mortal sins you can remember) forgives mortal sins!
Sins regarding sex (lust, porn, masturbation, etc.) are all sins of grave matter. Thus if they are done with full knowledge and complete consent, they are mortal sins. For things that are addicting, such as porn, the addiction might mitigate culpability of a particular sin (making it venial instead of mortal) IF one is taking the proper steps to get rid of the addiction (such as putting an internet filter on one’s computer).
BTW, don’t be discouraged if you keep having to go to confession over and over. I heard an older priest in a homily say that there is absolutely no sin which he hasn’t heard (which is scary considering he must have heard sins of murder and rape before).
