I have been away from the church since age 16…now 52. Had two children, raised in Christian churches, both baptized at age 12…I want to come back, but I can’t right now. I pray and I pray hard. Are my prayers being listened to?? My son died almost 4 years ago. Will he burn in hell because I made a serious mistake?? Does God listen to my prayers for my son’s soul?? I sneak, when I can to the chaple at the hospital to pray, but it’s not often. Will God forgive my son’s sins?? Please answer because there is no one else I can talk to.

Go to confession and repent.

God is a loving and merciful God, evidenced by the blessings he continues to shower on us despite our shortcomings. Repent and rest in God’s love.

You are in my prayers.:signofcross:

If your children were baptized with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, they were validly baptized even if it was in a non-Catholic church. I do not believe that anyone is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. Whatever your mistakes, you are responsible for them, not your son. He is responsible for the acts and choices of his own life. God would never be so cruel as to deny the possibility of salvation to someone because of something they had no control over. You cannot know the state of his soul when he died, or if he experienced perfect contrition in his last moments (no matter how he died.) We have no way of knowing in this life whether he is in heaven, or purgatory, or hell. We can only trust in the mercy of God. Wherever he is, though, it is because of his own decision to accept or reject God, not yours.

“He who prays is saved, he who does not pray is lost,” according to St. Alphonsus. I think He hears you. But you need to go to Confession as soon as you can. Let yourself receive God’s healing love through the Sacrament and stop torturing yourself for your mistakes. He wants you to come home. Whatever your obstacles, bring them to a priest and let him help you find a way to work through them. Nothing is impossible with God.

I left at 17. Returned at 43. It is never too late.

God ALWAYS hears us. Keep praying but more importantly, keep listening.

The children do not pay for the sins of the parents. Our Lord was clear on this.
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
4I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

you’re prayers are always heard, but are you saying that you think your son may go to hell for what sins you have done? or for the life he himself lived because of how your raised him?

well, just remember that God is all fair, and He does not send a person to hell if they honestly did not know what bad things in their life they were doing, if in their heart their intentions were good, and they loved Jesus, then sometimes that is all that matters.

i think the fact that you have converted back to the catholic church after all these years, says that God is definitely working in you, and He has special plans in mind for you,
and it could very well be, that your son did go to heaven, and the reason you have converted was because of his prayers for you,

no one here can honestly tell you that your son is in heaven, that is something only God can decide, but i can tell you that it is definitely possible.

alright, i’ll pray for your son, and for you as well. tc.

God Bless you.

It sounds as if you’re having a difficult time if you’re visiting a hospital chapel. There should be a Catholic chaplain available if you ask a member of staff. They can come and visit you to talk and hear your confession, whether you are a patient or a visitor.

You are in my prayers.

First of all, I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot begin to fathom the grief you must be feeling. Pope Benedict recently wrote in one of his encyclicals that the word “consolation” literally means to be alone with someone so that they are no longer alone. This family of the Catholic Church remains with you as you journey back. You are in our prayers, but most of all, Christ is with you, and I truly believe your son is in Heaven praying for you as you read this. God’s mercy is infinitely more powerful than your lived experience.

Please visit this website and watch the short little one-minute videos towards the bottom.

I will pray for you at mass, today.

God bless

Thanks to all who answered. I visited a recommended web site and I found so much relief. I never meant to say that I thought my son would suffer hell because of MY sins, but I was afraid he would suffer because I didn’t bring him up in the church. God is so giving and I thank Him for supplying your answers in my time of need.

Good, now run home. Dads waiting and he’s got the light on for you and a table laid out with the best food you could ever hope for.😃

Your son cannot suffer for your sins. Please do not think that! God is merciful and loving and He hears your prayers for the soul of your son. Please also be mindful of your own soul and continue in love and charity to come back to the Church and the Sacraments which can provide much solace during this time. I’ll keep you in my prayers!

no your son will not burn in hell for anything you did or did not do. Yes God listens to all your prayers. Why not come back to the Church so you can hear the true teaching, instead of having anxiety about a false idea? the comfort of the sacraments and the Mercy of Jesus are waiting for you, all you have to do is ask. There is NO reason you cannot come home. Welcome.
