I am scrupulous; have I received Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin?

Hi
I am fairly scrupulous and have a fear of blaspheming and I keep thinking I have ‘accidentally’ blasphemed. I have also been very worried at times about committing the unpardonable sin. But while at Mass Today, when saying prayers such as the Creed, I was constantly thinking things like ‘what if I blasphemed’ and I had horrible thoughts imagining me screaming out blasphemy’. This then lead to more blasphemous thoughts and I am always very worried about saying something blasphemous when praying because of the thoughts about blasphemy in my head.

I think I may have uttered something blasphemous under my breath about God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. When I’m thinking blasphemous thoughts or thinking about blasphemy, I take a big deep breath out while thinking of a thought praising God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. So sometimes when I take the breath and have a bad thought, I think I may have said something bad.

I’m just worried that I said something blasphemous during Mass and then received Communion in a state of mortal sin. I have never wanted to blaspheme and have no intention of wanting to. I wasn’t certain that I had committed a mortal sin, so was it ok to receive Communion? I’m worried that I might die before I can confess it in confession. I don’t hate God and if I had said something, it was probably due to anxiety.

Please help

Dear friend,

One CANNOT sin accidentally. The act must be OBJECTIVELY sinful. One must KNOW that the act is objectively sinful–and one must FREELY CHOOSE to act.

Your difficulty seems more psychological than spiritual. I don’t mean to alarm you, but your behavior sounds obsessively compulsive. There is a disorder, known as OCD, obsessve compulsive disorder. There is help available for this. You can contact me privately if you need some help in contacting a professional to help you. You are in my prayers.
