Jesus said we can have whatever we ask for in His name.

I heard it taught once that “in His name” means according to His will.

So if we submit our will to God’s will He will bless us with a desire for the very things he wants to give us. As a result our prayers will be answered and we will have whatever ask for in His name.

Correct?

Thanks

But we’ll still have desires for other things. Also remember: Be careful what you ask for; you might get it.

There is always an element of self interest in most of our prayers. Only the very great saints might be able to say they always asked for what was in line with God’s will. We are fallen, wounded people, which means our nature is corrupted, our intellect darkened, and our will weakened. We aren’t always able to discern the difference between what we want and what God wants for us. Which is why we oftentimes don’t get what we ask for.

Also, God doesn’t always say yes to our desires, no matter how much we might think we are asking for what would be pleasing to him. For our benefit he often says no or not yet. So, we ask trusting and believing that what we ask for will be given us according to God’s will and what is ultimately the best thing for us.

Based on the response it seems as though I don’t have it quite right.

But then I still need an answer to the question.

If asking in His name does not mean according to his will, then what does Jesus mean when he says we can have whatever we ask for in His name?

I think you’re correct, if we ask according to His and the Father’s will for us then it will be granted 😃
