My allergy to wheat is getting worse so that I can not safely receive the Eucharist anymore. To be honest this is driving me nutz. I want to be in full Communion with the Church, but how can I if I can’t receive the Eucharist?

I don’t know the rules on this but would praying the Blessed Sacrament Chaplet during the time every one receives the Eucharist be a good idea since I can’t safely receive the Eucharist?

If you know of any other chaplets for those who can not receive the Eucharist please feel free to mention them.

Thanks

My parish provides gluten-free (or low gluten?) hosts to people with wheat allergies. Maybe you could ask if they are available at your parish also, then you won’t have to miss communion at all. I hope it works out for you!

Speak with your Priest. He can provide you with low gluten hosts, it will be consecrated in a pyx for you. If you cannot tolerate even those, you can get a special tiny chalice. It will contain a small amount of wine that is consecrated for you. You will recieve under the species of blood only.

You have a couple of options. There is a low gluten host available. It has just enough gluten to be considered bread, but low enough that it is safe for most people.

You could also receive under the sign of wine. Even if your parish doesn’t routinely offer the chalice to everyone, your priest should be willing to consecrate a small cup so that you can receive.

For either of these, you will just need to contact your priest and see what you can work out with him. Call the office at your parish and set up an appointment.

If you can not receive communion, you can make a spiritual communion. Google that and you will come up with various ones.

Also, even if you can not receive communion, you are most certainly still Catholic and in communion with the Church.

Angel, you may also remember that Catholics are not required to receive Communion every Sunday. Actually, we are only required to do it once a year to be in Communion with the Church, so if you can receive Communion once a year, you should be alright. The blood of Jesus is another option too, and also the gluten hosts mentioned earlier.

God bless,

The Council of Trent said that receiving either species is receiving the full Sacrament.
CANON III.-If any one denieth, that, in the venerable sacrament of the Eucharist, the whole Christ is contained under each species, and under every part of each species, when separated; let him be anathema.

There was a woman in my parish who was tubefed and she only recieved a very, teeny, tiny piece at Communion. This worked well for her.

God bless, Melissa

on a side note, I was at a Mass many years ago during a hot Summer day. The Church didnt have air conditioning and for some reason I was extremely sensitive to that environment that I was perspiring pretty heavily. As I felt very self conscious, I chose to remain in the pew during the Eucharist. I made a spiritual Communion, but still felt badly that i didnt actually receive. Even though I didnt receive, could it have been possible that I actually benefited from the Sacrament–given the unusual circumstances?

Speak with your pastor about the low gluten (not gluten free) Hosts available or receiving only from the chalice.

You still need to receive the Eucharist once a year . You may certainly pray during reception of the Eucharist. On those occasions on which you wish to receive you may receive from the priests cup, or common cup or a separate chalice consecrated for you without the small piece of the host or you may try the low gluten hosts. You may also choose to receive a small piece of the bread on occasion if you can tolerate it. Even if it is only the one time a year that will fulfill your obligation to receive.

There are two people at the Mass I attend who cannot consume any wheat. We prepare a separate chalice just for them. They receive communion under the species of the Precious Blood. I would bet your pastor would do this for you.

Receiving under the species of wine only likewise fulfils the obligation.

As the mom of a couple of celiacs, I just want to point out that if the OP has a “wheat allergy”, a low-gluten host won’t do any good, as it is still wheat, and OP may be allergic to something besides just the gluten component. I’d hate for somebody to think the low-gluten hosts were safe if they weren’t actually okay.

We can take the gluten out of the hosts, but we can’t take the wheat out. Receiving from the chalice is probably the only option.

Thank you every for your replies. Over the past few months my allergies and asthma have become more severe. Sadly low gluten wafers are no longer an option for me. The last time I received Holy Communion I almost stopped breathing according to my husband. I’m so thankful that he is an R.N, he knew what to do. I don’t really remember much of what happened due to the severity of the reaction, but I do remember him taking care of me. This happened at our new perish. For the past few months I have been unable to attend Mass at our old perish with out having a severe allergic reaction to something in the building. Until the problem is fixed, we are attending Mass at a new perish, which for the most part is allergy free. Though sadly if I come in contact with any one who owns a cat, or dog, or if someone sitting near us is wearing the wrong type of perfume I end up having a severe allergic reaction.

Please say a prayer for me, I miss the days when I could go to Mass and be able breath through the whole Mass.

You were right low-gluten and low-wheat are two totally different things. Low-gluten wafers still contain enough wheat to cause someone allergic to wheat to have an allergic reaction. Hopefully the next time we go to Mass I will be able to stay long enough to talk with Fr.Tom about receiving through the wine.

Hi,
you know that the bread and the wine are equal and both are Jesus. You can receive the blood and that will be enough go to the head priest and tell him that you have this problem and you what the blood of Christ.

wheat sadly is an essential ingredient of the bread to be consecrated. so there’s no such thing as no-wheat communion wafers

as the poster above mentioned, speak to the priest and ask to receive the Precious Blood
