Is it just me, or has the “Christmas” music in the malls become really, really annoying? No traditional Christmas carols, just pop songs containing the word Christmas somewhere in the lyrics, played obnoxiously loud–and if there are any old classic songs like “White Christmas” or “Jingle Bells” they’re done in jazz, country western, or lounge singer style, crooned, groaned and moaned. Far from putting me in a festive mood and encouraging me to shop, it makes me want to run out of the store with my hands over my ears.

I absolutely LOVE the Transiberian Orchestra and the Mannheim Steamroller renditions. Those have become my favorites!

I totally agree, the other day I heard a raggae version of “O Christmas Tree”. Enough to drive you crazy. I honestly cannot wait for the commercial side of the Christmas season to be over.

As long as they’re not playing “pop” renditions, I’m not very bothered by it. It is great to hear well-played carols instead though.

God bless,

Agricola

If I hear “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” one more time, esp by Frank Sanatra, I am going to throw something. I work in the grocery store and they play this song over and over and over and over. it’s SO annoying!!! what do “scary ghost stories” have to do with the birth of Christ??? :banghead:

Oh and “Hay santa” by Wilson Phillips. ACK! and there is some stupid song where a lady “wishes to santa with all my might” give me a break, will ya’?
there is a Christian radio station here that has been playing lovely Christmas carols and that’s all I’ve been listening to on the radio besides Catholic radio because I am sick of it too and I get enough of it at work. and my cash redgester is right under a speaker, so there’s no escaping it! I feel your pain.

There’s nothing like trying to make your way through an overly warm, crowded mall with crying children everywhere, going from store to store in frustration because you can’t find the one item you want to get, your feet starting to ache, and then “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” comes over the P.A. system. By the way, the “scary ghost stories” part comes from the English custom of telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve (why, I don’t know), hence Dickens’ Christmas Carol with all the ghosts in it.

I’m so glad I don’t work in retail any more. I wouldn’t be able to stand the mall music. Years ago I worked at Marshall Field’s, and at that time they played the traditional carols in instrumental form interspersed with regular music, so you didn’t have a Christmas music overload. No matter how busy and frazzled I was feeling, whenever “Silent Night” came on, it would always bring me peace.

Our local Catholic newspaper includes an article this week about Mr. Ronald Clancy, who loved Christmas carols so much he has spent the last 15 years putting together music colloections. Although I have not yet purchased his CDs, it looks very promising. Check out his web site. christmasclassics.com/

If I hear those stupid dogs bark Jingle Bells just ONE MORE TIME…

watch for the news…it will be out of Modesto, California
woman goes mad in mall…

I can handle even the secular Christmas songs in small doses but during this time of year, you hear them over and over again everywhere you go. After awhile it begins to drive you crazy.

Maybe the Good Lord is telling us that you can’t find Christmas in a mall. (Problem is… where does a person get groceries?)

It is, I think, someone trying to quench a thirst that even the most quaint possessions can’t quench… trying to buy off that hunger with the lure of creating (buying) a mood or re-creating a happy circumstance that only exists in nostalgia.

I feel sad for anyone caught up in those false hopes. I try to bring what is real about Christmas when I’m in those places, which is to say a way of meeting people that lets them know that I realize that they are deeply and eternally loved. If you go at it as if you were on a mission of no-words or few-words preaching, you can endure a great deal more Frank Sinatra than you ever thought possible.
