Hello Fishy.
The Church called him dangerous to read! And there is a ban on his publication!
You’ve just answered your own question. When you are head of the CDF, or one of the men whose work that is for that matter, you read quite a bit of stuff no one else ever does. It is part of the work. Think of it like this: the cops see all kinds of stuff that isn’t made public and which is bad for folks, yet if they comment on it, you don’t wonder why they’re commenting on it. It is part of their jobs to look at evidence. That is one of the thing Pope Benedict did - he constantly had evidentiary stuff in his hands and spent a great deal of time looking over things that will never see daylight. There may have been and probably were folks working to get the ban on Chardin lifted and have his name vindicated. In that case, those whose job it is to review that stuff would’ve had to read the works in question once again to re-issue or remove the ban. See what I mean? Chardin was on his mind because his works were being worked in at the CDF. Simple logic applied.

Chardin is a danger. That remains. There are those who ignore the Church’s warning and read him anyway. Finding out the Pope actually read his works and finds something okay in something he says in no way* clears the man*. It simply says he was right about something somedays and the debate over him can continue. Use common sense instead of emotions.
