Hats off to the OP for the most scrambled and disorganized thread I have ever seen on this forum.

Winner of the scrambled eggs hold the “meat” award.
In my listening area, we have a radio talk show host who, when the caller is scrambled and/or disorganized, simply says, “Oh, my, will you look at the time? I have an appointment back on planet Earth.”

I think many of us jumped in only to defend EWTN from the off-the-wall rantings.

Manfred,

I know what you mean. I had to pitch a ton of “fatima crusader” periodicals from the free stuff table at Church.

What in the world is happening here? If people have a beef with the Church or persons who are in it (validly) why are there bitter wannabe “reformers” out there?

See ya later- dont let the door hit you in the rump I say.

…We’re supposed to like Gregorian Chant. Well, why is that? Because Sister Angelica liked it? …
Well, I guess Sister (or “Mother”) and “Papa” (Benedict XVI) have something in common ;).

[…] An authentic updating of sacred music can take place only in the lineage of the great tradition of the past, of Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony…](http://www.chiesa.espressonline.it/dettaglio.jsp?id=67801&eng=y)

Crazy thread. But come on – EWTN is amazingly great. It saves souls and brings people closer to God every hour.

Of course you could criticize anything – but every minute you spend critizing Mother Angelica is one less that you spent trying to spread the Faith, convert non-Catholics and doing good to those in need. I won’t mention the time lost that should be spent in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. We’ve got to get serious and save souls. Attacking each other, whining about the very best Catholic tv network in the world – it’s nuts.

Of course, Satan is working overtime to ruin our good work and take souls down. Let’s fight the good fight and support EWTN and build up a good parish life. Goodness, we need better parishes – hey, just start a prayer group or bible study even with two or three people.

Anything is better than criticizing Mother Angelica – that is just sad. God bless EWTN!!!

**When you are a nun or a monk, the people you help guide are your children. This is why Sr. Angelica is called “Mother” by us.

Besides that, why criticise Religious? It seems so silly. They spend more time in front of the Blessed Sacrament and in prayer than we do. How could we possibly match that? If anything, we should look up to Religious as modern-day role models and heroes. I would rather buy a nun doll than a Spiderman doll. Why? Someone tries to kill Spiderman, he gets webbed up and his rump kicked and then hung somewhere for police to pick up. Someone tries to kill a nun, she forgives him. The nun’s response is a stunning witness of Christ.

The only beef I have about EWTN is that not everything is closed captioned. I would love it if their masses were closed captioned, even the Latin parts. Mmm… agnus dei… 👍

There are threads on EWTN, which discuss things.

What I don’t like is that Mother Angelica seemed to be the dictator and final judge about everything. She seemed to be her own standard and applied it across the network.

I don’t think that you have to have Latin in the Mass, as much as she beat this subject to death.

I disliked her matronizing attitude with callers to her “Live” program. She was a “Mother” Superior to her order, but I don’t understand why she had everybody calling her “Mother.”

It seemed phony and forced, like that episode of Seinfeld, where Elaine was dating this guy who insisted on being called “Maestro.”

The Mass on EWTN is a “conventual” Mass – that is, it follows the standards and practices (such as the use of Latin) of a convent, instead of the norms that I have seen at Masses across the country.

I don’t like how EWTN Masses largely use the same syrupy sweet melodies for the Mass. When the nuns were there, there was quite some artistic music. The music is now dropped below the previous quality. We’re supposed to like Gregorian Chant. Well, why is that? Because Sister Angelica liked it? Did the viewers decide on that?

I think EWTN should be leading the country in excellence of the Order of the Mass. What we hear in the day-in, day-out comments, is that the EWTN staff is using the donations to the network for lots and lots of travel – which edifies them. Well, how about a little more that edifies us?

Why not some more intercessions at Mass for the donors and benefactors of EWTN, instead of always for the pope, the bishops, the priests, the nuns, the brothers, and usually not much else except very frequently for Mother Angelica herself?

As I said before, I guess if I had a religious network, I’d make sure everybody was praying for me, too.

I agree, that I don’t know what this thread has to do with EWTN, specifically.
You have a problem with Mother Angelica being called ‘Mother’? That’s her title (Mother Superior), and it’s the correct form of address to the best of my knowledge.

Like everyone calls the Pope ‘Your Holiness’ and a priest ‘Father’, the Superior of a Convent is entitled to be addressed as ‘Mother’ by everyone.

crumpy,

Ever try watching some of those other religious channels, like INSP or TBN or Daystar or even some Catholic diocesan offerings? None of these can hold a candle to EWTN! And don’t get me started on whether you think the US bishops could do a better job; they couldn’t even get their own channel “off the ground”, so to speak.

“Mother” is her official title as Mother Superior of the order at her convent. Not many nuns today even live in convents, but Mother is reacting to the overly-liberal agenda she sensed in the US church that the “shepherds” didn’t well tend to.

Us too,we are both hearing impaired. They had many great programs, but without closed captioned, we are lost. 😦

For this matter, maybe “Extra ecclesia non salus (no salvation outside the Church” should be brought back into style and leave the mitigating circumstances to priests. Certain “Catholics” not given the indult to do their Masses and sacraments requiring jurisdiction for their bishops should listen up.
I have no complaint with EWTN, but tend to agree with you on this. We should downplay other religions as being so great, because they’re not. Everyone outside of the Holy Catholic Church are on an indirect - and uncertain - path to God. While salvation for some is possible, that is not to say that any individual person outside the Church will be saved. We must return to full Evangelism. Christ sent the Church to teach and baptise, etc. Not to proclaim how great other religions are.

Well, don’t you take comfort in those programs on EWTN that DOES have closed captioning?

We work out our salvation, like the Apostle Paul, in trembling and in fear.
Fact of the matter is most catholics (certainly most catholics I know) do not tremble and fear at all. They go through thier life without giving thier salvation more then a passing thought.

Nominal catholics are the vast majority of catholics. I constantly ponder just how Jesus will deal with this.

I had a discussion with family members the other night. Both cradle catholics. Not only are they “cafeteria” catholics they have never heard the term cafeteria catholic. When I mentioned the term it sparked conversation which went quite well. They are both very good listeners, respect my (name removed by moderator)ut and are very reasonable people. I know I got them both thinking. But this is not the first time conversation like this has occured. I susppect from passed experience that they have already forgotten about it (or cast it aside) and will continue thier norminal ways. Which include being Eurcharistic Ministers on the rare occasion they go to mass.

In my experience, this defines the church today. Let alone protestant / jew / mormon / JW / Moslem vs. catholic. The Orthodox Catholic is a very rare individual.

Well said!

Some of our biggest problems the Catholic Church has are not with non-Catholics but with those who CALL themselves Catholic and know next-to-nothing about their Faith. But, of course, this has nothing at all to do with the sorry state of religious ed. since Vatican II now - does it?

The terms left and right are political and don’t apply to the church. When they are applied to the church they generlly mean a catholic who follows and agrees with church doctrine and dogma (right) or a catholic who doesnt (left). As this is the case it is more succinct to say that someone is either an orthodox catholic or a heterodox or heretical catholic, right being orthodox and left being heretic. A heretic being a baptized catholic who obstinately refuses to accept some aspect of church doctrine by refusing to give interior assent and exterior respect (canon 754). according to canon 1364 all heretics are subject to latea sententia excomunication. All doctrine should be given this respect and the importance of differet aspects should not be under or overemphasized. To determine what deserves emohasis follow the pope.

Why would people who disagree with the dogma of the Roman Church remain in it?

Once I found out I had a number of disagreements with the Roman Church, I left it. Why would people stay with a community that declares them heretics?

It doesn’t seem like an ideal place for them (let alone a Christian place for them, but that’s another matter…)

Some stay in in order to make it in their own image. Tradition with a small “t” to me is like saying it’s good enough to just shoot for the basics of a valid and licit confession instead of getting it done as thoroughly as possible (for those not suffering from scrupulosity at the time, anyway). Someone complained when I said the N.O. is just as good as the TLM. I don’t see it. The Mass that was only modified slightly from the Apostles’ time was modified only slightly for a good reason. Even Bl. John 23rd only slightly altered it; his doing away with the gloom and doom, as he saw pre Vatican 2 theology or theological accentuations probably messed the Church up (though our sins helped greatly). The N.O. allows for too much grandstanding by lectors and the priest (one priest says it gave the lay extraordinary eucharistic ministers the equivalent of minor orders), music and architecture are not Catholic in inspiration. They are not built to praise God and lift us spirituallty, but for artistic sensibilities.
This is the left. It’s just going far enough to the heterodox without becoming heretics. There was a book called “Liberalism is a Sin” for a reason. We have Babel and a wide loss of Faith after Vatican 2 which may not have been totally itsa fault, but it helped.

Actually, I don’t know if it’s Vatican 2. Let’s say aggiormento (sp?).
