Harvey, it doesn’t sound like your “heart is far from God,” as the poster you responded to stipulated with regard to praying in vain.

I hope you’re right but, from my perspective, since I don’t absolutely believe in God (hard for me to type that), that is far from God, isn’t it? But, still, my point is that even if one is far from God, praying with the right attitude can be and has shown to be very helpful.

I quite agree, especially if we’re talking about getting graces for conversion. 🙂

Incidentally, I think it’s great that you’re making an attempt to dispose yourself to grace. In my own life, I spent a period of time as being viscerally anti-Christian. But I still had a tiny, tiny part of me that was curious. I wanted to know if it’s true. Somewhere in my heart, I prayed to God and asked Him to reveal Himself if He’s really there.

God built upon that with more and more grace and, although it took me a decade, I eventually joined the Church. God always answers our prayers in His own time and in His own way, as long as we’re open to Him.

I like to pray the rosary before I go out for the day and sometimes I just can’t even get through a whole decade which makes me feel guilty. Can anybody relate?
It is much better to pray one Mystery with your whole heart than to force your way through an entire Rosary. Spend time with just one Mystery. Think about how Mary felt holding Jesus in her arms or imagine Elizabeth’s joy when Mary came to visit and help her. Imagine the scene and place yourself in the moment of the mystery.

Sometimes I just hold the beads and forget to count.

Christ has given us Mary to love us. Accept that love and know that she understands.
