Hello All. As my title says I think I am somewhat lost in my Faith. I am trying to strenghten my Faith. I have a Bible given to me for my First Communion and I have a daily reading ‘schedule’ to read the Bible in a year that I started last week. I am reading what I am supposed to but I have trouble understanding the importance and implications of what is being said. I cannot find a Catholic Bible Study for me to attend, so it seems that I am on my own for now. I would like to be confirmed in the Catholic Church soon (next year or so…). What all should I do to help myself in my Bible Studies, aside from continueing my daily readings? And to be Confirmed? Any ideas? Thanks!

Although I am not a catholic I would say that you can find help and bible study on the internet. Try searching for an online group if you can’t find one near you. Keep your faith and know that God will reveal to you what you need to know and He will provide the support to understand His beautiful will. I will keep you in my prayers! 🙂

There is a great online Catholic bible study that is free, by Scott Hahn:

www.salvationhistory.com

There are different levels to choose from, so start with one of the beginning lessons and you’ll find yourself drawn into the Bible as never before!

I would just suggest NOT starting at the beginning and reading straight through. I think there is a commonly known “best” route to take: first the gospels, then Acts… I don’t know. I didn’t heed their advice and ended up stalling in the OT. I’m sure someone else can help with the suggested order.

First of all, this is excellent advice! (I speak as one who has “stalled in the OT” many a time myself!)
Another good place to find an internet Bible study is “Catholic Home Study Service”.It is free–so are the studies at the other site, but I’ve only looked at that one. I am actually doing a CHSS study right now. You read the parts of the Bible that apply to the lesson & submit them online. You don’t have to read every single word in the OT, in order to get something out of it. In fact, I think that it probably works the opposite–If you get hung up on something in the OT, you may never make it into the New Testament; or you might give up on ever trying to understand the Bible at all, which would be very sad.
I hope that this helps, & you are in my prayers, also! God bless.

As a Catholic, I still continue with several dry spells along the path, and it’s perfectly normal, because at times, through these troubles and tribulations, when we succeed through them, we become more acquainted with the Lord.

If you could find a bible study at your parish, that would be nice, (even though my bible study at church tends to be more devotional, which for me, I rather have need for actual study itself) or try Lectio Divina; I’m sure one of the members can help you if you are interested.

Using your bible also during prayers is another that has helped me through my obtrusive life. I will be praying for you!

"Let thy thoughts be upon the precepts of God, and meditate continually on his commandments: and he will give thee a heart, and the desire of wisdom shall be given to thee."

I recommend Jeff Cavin’s Great Adventure Bible study on DVD 👍 . You can get it from St. Joseph’s communications. I am in it now and it is excellent.

I humbly recommend starting at my web-page, Catholic Scripture Study, linked below. I set it up especially for people like you.

Thank You all. I will look into these websites. My Parish, the only one in town, does not have a study group. The nearest Parish after that is 45 minutes away, and with the gas prices the way they are and my gas guzzling truck…well I am not going to make it over there often enough to make a big difference. I have already learned not to read the OT through from the begining, tried that. No one has said anything about Confirmation, but I should probably strengthen my Faith before being Confirmed. Again Thank You all for the advice. It is greatly appreciated.

If you want to know what the Bible teaches - get a Cathechism. It is replete with Bible passage references.

Two other pieces of advice:
  1. You need to know basics before you are confirmed, but you don’t need to be an expert. Confirmation will confirm you and prepare you for further growth as a Christian.
  2. Surround yourself with believers, as much as possible. The best treatment for floundering faith after prayer, is surrounding one’s self with believes, with the faithful of the Church. Isolation is very hard, and very few are called to it.

I was a bit flabergasted myself! No one has mentioned the most basic first step…If you are at all interested in pursuing Confirmation, you NEED to be enrolled in the RCIA program at you parish. There you will not only find scripture study, but also catechism study and how the two relate to each other. And most importantly, you will find a support system that can help you to pray, answer your questions, help you build Faith, and bring you into the church fold, as a family member. When embarking on a spiritaul quest, we need the strength of the faithful around us to give us encouragment when Satan slings his arrows, and he will. I will be praying for you!
