I feel silly for asking (protocol when praying to saints)

I’m trying to pray more in general and have a couple of questions about praying to the saints. I apologize because I know these may seem silly. Anyway…

  1. *]Do you kneel when praying to the saints or is that reserved for praying to God?
    *]Do you make the sign of the cross before and after prayers to the saints?

When ever I pray, I always make the sign of the Cross, before I being praying,wether to God,Jesus,Mary,or Saints.
 
You can kneel if you want, stand if you want, lie down if you want sit if you want or run if you want. There are no requirements or prohibitions whatsoever.👍

You can make the cross if you want to and if you don’t want to you don’t have to.

It is all up to you:thumbsup:
 
That’s great you are praying to the saints! Which saints are your favorites?

When it comes to praying to them, like other posters have said, you can sit, kneel, stand, walk, etc… There is no formality to it at all. And I make the sign of the cross frequently before and after I pray. It gives me peace especially during a busy day! 😃

I don’t have any favorites yet. 🙂 As I read about them, I’d like to say a prayer, though.
 
I like to create a strong distinction, in my prayer life, between talking to the saints and talking to God.

During the Litany of Humility before the Office of Readings each day, I kneel to ask Christ to deliver me, and to grant us grace. At the very end, I stand to ask St. Joseph, the universal patron of the Church, to pray for us. During Compline, I kneel for the prayers, Psalms, and readings. At the conclusion, I stand for the Marian antiphon to the Mother of God.

This is all about mindset. I, personally, find it easy to slip into different mindsets while kneeling, standing, or bowing. I associate all acts of profound reverence with the Lord God only. For me to kneel during prayer with any of the saints feels like a sin. Others don’t mind at all, and if they can pray in that manner without problems.

We should make the sign of the Cross at all times, before doing anything - even the most trivial things. I don’t pray to a dinner plate when I make the Sign before eating! Invoking the Holy Trinity is never a bad idea… 🙂

Thank you; I think this fits me best, too. I love the sign of the cross, so I’m happy to do it anywhere, anytime. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing it inappropriately. Kneeling for me feels like worship rather than just praying, so I’m more comfortable doing that only when praying to the Lord God. That’s probably due to my Protestant roots. 😃
 
Don’t feel silly – it’s a great question. I talk to them just like I talk to God when I ask for their assistance and for them to pray for either me and my need, or a need of another…

My patron Saint is Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. If we pray and ask them to pray for us, then when we should be in heaven it will be like we already know them.! (just my 2 cents)…

And yes, always make the sign of the Cross – the sign of the Cross in and of itself is a prayer – In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…once I was at a parich in downtown for a midday Mass during the workday…the priest was giving his homily when an ambulance went past. He never missed a word as he kept on with the homily, biut as the ambulance passed, he also made the sign of the cross.

Thanks so much for sharing that. My husband is a deputy and whenever I hear sirens, I always worry. I’ll start making the Sign of the Cross whenever I hear it now. 🙂

Praying is good for our soul, and it does give peace to your mine,plus they listen to our request,and ask God to help us in our need.
