I chose Architecture, but looking more into it, it would seem as comfort and luxury is just not parallel to my believes. I know there is much more about architecture, and even the career can take you anywhere.
But Im having trouble relating or accepting those points about it.

I was just hoping you could express your opinion and calm my thoughts 😃

Thanks guys

The Church loves architecture as you can tell from the church buildings.
Maybe someday you could design a church.

It’s not about the profession it’s how you use that profession for the better good of God and humanity.

Well, if you work in architecture to make a living, you could volunteer on the side.

Or, you could also find work that reflects more what you want, as well. It’s your call.

Architecture is said to have a 10% Employment rate…as opposed to other fields with a 10% UNemploment rate.

My daughter switched her major for this reason…to design. Folks can afford to remodel, but not necessarily build form scratch.

Good luck! And as others have said…it’s your integrity that is important. And your charity.
Peace.

First, you could (please!!!) study church architecture and what it’s supposed to be and design some beautiful Catholic churches 🙂 Maybe part-time…

And this: I once worked as an assistant to someone who went into people’s homes to do some work. I did not make a lot of money doing this, and most of my friends were kinda quasi-Communists, being fresh out of college.

But I used to love when we went to the ritzy part of town. Such beauty, lovely houses and gardens.

And y’know, I could go there any time I wanted to look 🙂

Since then, I always felt like it was good that some people could build like that. The Communists would ultimately have us all in sterile high rises. This experience taught me what the saying “A cat can look at a queen” means.

So go out and build beautiful buildings for all to enjoy and for the glory of God 🙂

I think you have a wonderful opportunity here. While many people do look for bigger and better more comfort and luxury, some of us are dreaming of smaller homes with a smaller carbon footprint (and some creature comforts.) Consider the challenge of designing 400-600 square feet instead of 3-6,000 square feet.

Change the world with one small space at a time. 👍

there have been some good points already. in this day and age, we need quility buildings that won’t fall apart on us in 5-10 years.

also you could go help build things in other countries that need it, if you want to

I’m in a position right now where I’m trying to decide between two different career paths. On the surface, it seems like an easy choice. One job is a management position in my current retail job, the other is as a campus missionary.

While I’ve tried to determine which path God is calling me to, a couple things have helped me stay calm. First, even if what I’ve chosen isn’t what He wants for me, He will make it for His plan. Look at Calvary. The cross is the pinnacle of human torture and capital punishment. Yet God used that horrible moment to redeem all mankind.

Second, both jobs will allow me to serve Christ in different ways. While one is a more direct service, the other would allow me the financial resources and stability to support the ministry in my local parish. I would also have the time available to volunteer as a youth minister in my parish, where we expect to have almost 150 candidates for confirmation next year and need all the faithful instructors we can get.

I hope these thoughts will comfort you as much as they have me.

John,
I was wondering: Are you an architect or studying to be one?

It also works the other way around: Catholicism must have everything to do with the career we choose. We can live out our faith, and have it influence our surroundings positively, no matter where we find ourselves.

John,
Sixty Minutes once had a segment on a hospital orderly who wheeled the sick children into surgery. He sang to them. He was heavily requested by the parents who brought in their sick children. Sounds like he made something special out of his job.

I suppose your desired career seems rather abstract now. Perhaps it will parlay into a real ministry as a Catholic man, a follower of Jesus. Continue learning more about both your faith and architecture.

Read some stuff on medieval architecture and the philosophy/theology that was behind it.

When I was in university, one of the architecture majors I’ve met was a member of Opus Dei.
According to St. Josemaria Escriva, one of my favorite saints, people can advance in holiness through their jobs.
