I belong to a university catholic group that has mission projects every summer. This summer, they’re doing a mission project in my very own city. I applied, and I was accepted. I have not confirmed my attendance yet, though. I’m kind of worried about fundraising and spending my whole summer living with strangers. Has anyone else done something similar? What was it like? Also, does anyone have any fundraising ideas? I have to raise $3000, and that scares me a little. :o

Personally, I detest fund-raising, although I realize it’s important.

jlr247;

First, - go to an get The Spirituality of Fundraising here www.henrinouwen.org/home/booklet

Second, Pray every day to be funded. Anyone who joins you in your mission work (by joining your “support team”) pray for them and their intentions. If you don’t know their intentions - you should ask.

Third, talk to your parish priest and ask to address the parish.

Lot’s of Catholic’s detest fund raising and many complain about the constant appeals they hear at their parish. The fact is that less than 2% Catholics on average tithe (give 10% or more) while 8% of Evangelicals do. Tithing, alms giving, supporting the church in her material needs is not only a great and noble thing to do it is noble. It’s our way of participating in the ministry of the church for which we are are called to - especially evangelization.

We should not be complaining about fund raising but instead complaining that our brothers and sisters are not “pulling their weight” when it comes to supporting the church. Protestants have us beat here and that is downright embarrassing.

In America I think this is an extension of our prideful and egocentric worldview. Everything revolves around us. My family and I even suffered this and we didn’t fully realize it until we entered the mission field. What you have to raise for one mission trip I have to raise to support my family each month. But it is a blessed to get others involved in evangelizing others and helping to grow theirs and our relationship with Christ Jesus.

Is it possible that God is inviting you to get more people involved, via supporting you, in your missionary work or do you think God wants you to go at it all by yourself? Do you feel like God is calling you to do this missionary work but doesn’t want to open the doors to fuding it for you?

call organizations or businesses that have some kind of relationship to the work you will be doing.

Granddaughter got some money from the local store of a nationwide home improvement-hardware chain (don’t want to name it so they won’t get a run of requests) who not only paid a good chunk of her expenses but donated tools and supplies to her sponsoring organization. the same store gave supplies and paint to her girl scout troop for a service project, because the girls prepared a professional looking proposal and request.

Another college friend who is doing research to benefit new mothers and babies, got sponsorship money from one of our old clients, who produces, among other things, baby care products. She did her homework and prepared what amounted to a grant request, and got it.
